Ok currently i have a idq10 leftover from my last car and it just dont cut it in my falcon, so i'm after a new sub. The sub i'm looking at is a JL15W3, now the question is will there be a noticable difference in car? i'm not after huge bass just a bit more kick and some low stuff i have about 400rms to power it and the box i'm looking at is sealed 2.25cuft sealed.

Any thoughts would be good. thanks

I assume you've tried different orientations in the boot (eg facing back/forward/up with seats down etc ?) Would it be worth considering a different enclosure design to get some more volume out of it (just a suggestion can't really say w/o knowing the specs though). If you like the actual sound of the IDQ, but just want it louder, would it be worth adding a 2nd one ?

I haven't heard an IDQ 10, but I run a pair of 10W3...Considering the 15W3 has more excursion and slightly more cone area, my advice would be invest in some SD for the boot lid and parcel shelf The only other suggestion would be will the transition b/w the sub and splits still be as "nice" as you have now?? ie. 5x7s splits and 10" sub, compared to 5x7s and 15" ??

hmm, so are you running a nice ported box tuned really low?

hmm, with 'only' 400WRMS on tap, the 15W3 would be pretty good.

but you would get 'louder' subbass from the W0 series which rely on less power. even a 12W0 would hammer nicely, and with the appropriate box (2cuft would be sweet) it'll sound very nice (knowing you're an SQ kinda man).

maybe you need a bigger subamp too?

falcons have a large hole that pops out of the centre of the rear shelf- the fairmont ghia has an 8" sub there. I've seen 10's put there but there's some space issues... also it will sound like s%^& without some sort of enclosure.

rear load with the IDQ and put the sub in a bigger ported box tuned LOWWW...

should rumble nearly as muchas that sealed 15.

IMO no matter what you do with box design etc for a 10", you will always struggle to get decent bass in a car that big. In the case of SQ you will struggle even more because you need to try retain as much tighness and clarity as possible. Rear loading may help but building a bigger enclosure will see you go quickly towards SPL and away from SQ.

I would suggest at least a single 12" or if possible a dual 12" setup. In a sedan your size that would provide heaps of bass and at the same time will be an SQ setup. Also make sure you have adequate power.

Having read your post, if you only have 400WRMS to play with definitely get a 15". This will give you guaranteed results straight up, although going a single 12" and adding another later would probably be better for SQ. Either way, there is no proven formula.

Thanks for the comments fella's. Ive tried the 10 every which but loose and i like the sound where it is now. When i'm not driving just parked it provides plenty of bass for me but once the car gets going its gone!

crape a year ago 400rms was heaps now its "only" 400rms

You will always lose some of the SQ or bass out of a system when you start driving. Roadnoise is a common area many of us SQ'ers try to eliminate so that the music remains the same, but in many cases you find yourself reaching for the volume control or wishing you had bigger better subs. If what you have works for you, in particular when you have the car off then leave it as it is, unless you have the cash to start changing things.

400WRMS into a sub is very decent power and will give very nice bass. Some of us get a bit carried away and end up with overkill which is why those comments come about.
