I don't think much of rear speakers in a car, especially a coupe with a fairly small cabin, what are your thoughts? I'd much prefer to have a nice 3 way front set up and use a single 4 channel amp to run it - in my opinion it sounds better and makes the system less complex (which, afaic, is a good thing!)

what do you guys reckon?

Personally, Im also of the opinion that a properly set up 3way component system up front is all that is required. I know thats what I'll be doing

well i dont know about 3-way being a necessity, but yeah, with a well setup front stage, rear speakers arent needed and there is amble ambience and breadth to the sound stage.

that said, rear speakers do have a place in the SQ junkys experimental arsenal, if you are careful and tricky, or, if your front speaker locations are not optimised while i often crusade against rear speakers and their evils, they can actually help you out sometimes. for instance, they can help raise the sound stage up a few inches, and bring it up off the dash a little to give it a more '3-dimentional' effect (though this reduces the 'forward' effect most of us persue. enhanced 'space and ambience' is another trick most people know with just a little rear fill helping this along and making the soundstage ‘bigger’. But another thing most people don’t know, is rear speakers can even help image placement (especially your centre image), if your willing to experiment and think outside the square - but its tricky…

on the downside, i find that rear speakers virtually always add colouration and muddiness to overall response, by the virtue of their being two more cones flapping around the cabin, WAY out of sync with the front drivers, and often with their own unique response curve thanks to usually being different speakers (6x9’s, coaxes etc), or, having enhanced mid-bass due to the larger cavity of a boot providing better infinite-baffle operation. plus, even when playing subtley for ‘fill’, they pull your stage back somewhat and create a diffuse 'fuzziness' which upsets image definition.

this is the cost of using them, some find it acceptable, others don’t

Rear fill is very much a personal choice so this question is a bit too hard to answer on a general level. Some can get it to work, others don't use it at all. IMO, it depends on your setup, the equipment you are using and whether the rear fill integrates well with the fronts to keep a good front stage.

When i had the new boston rally splits as my front splits it sounded great...But i always thought it lacked something. And that something was rear fill.

Ive now just recently purchased new Boston PRO 6.5 inch splits, which should sound good in my new car....... For rear fill, ill be using the new rally 6.5 inch splits, and be going as far as running them of a kicker zr-240 amp.......But as previosly said, rear fill is personnel choice...You can simply just get cheap coaxials and run them of the HU for rear fill, or you can (like myself) get expensive splits and run them of an amp.

I personaly like filling the cabin with sound in all area's.

Good Luck!!!

On some cars it's a help on some a hindrance.....it can help stage height in some cars....my last car i used the factory rear speakers wired in mono...and it helped with stage height a bit but they were run at an extremely low level......i don't have a problem with rear fill when used properly but some people confuse rear fill with rear stage, which are 2 totally different things...

i didn't like rearfill in my latest setup, despite going to some length to install them. but unlike many cars, they were in the rear doors.

but i plan to change by adding splits into the parcel shelf (sedan).

for SQ, i fade rears out, but for multimedia/dolby digital, you obviously rely on it, which is why i'm going ahead with a quality rear install.

I never thought i'd be considering rear fill but after pulling out everything for the sound deadening i noticed the speakers are stuffed (surround is torn). So i'm going to be getting rear fill anyway.

The only time i'll use it is for A/V purposes anyway, not for SQ.

Richard C. has obviously never heard a good amp.

Someone buy him a HR100 so he can be bought back to reality!

Richard, is a very knowledgeable man in many area's, so why does he keep making this stupid statement. Sure if we detune everything to the lowest comon denominator it may be a little difficult but there ARE DIFFERENCES!
