hey,

im just seeing what options i have for 2 channel amps putting out around ~100W Rms x 2. Price range im looking for ~$500 streetprice.
On my list i had a T420/T320 alpine v12, what else should i be considering that has greater or equal SQ? Could an LRX be bought for that price?

thanks
chris

I doubt you'll find an LRx in that price range, maybe as little as $800ish if you're lucky...

what will you use the amp for? specifically, what splits/speakers?

...do you really need such a powerful amp, coz it will cost $$$ for a really good one.

for $500, you'll get something very good without being audiophile. i would be guided by what quality speakers you're driving. if it's highly premium splits you have (eg: focal utopia, dynaudio, etc, etc), then look at a suitably high quality amp, even if you have to compromise a little on power. but for midprice splits, you will still get the best from them with a very good quality amp.

others to consider:
* coustic 401SE
* cadence Q3000
* DLS classic series CA21

if you want better quality with less rated power (which in reality may not be audibly apparent), you could look at phoenix gold XS/tantrum, DLS reference, hertz, etc.

good luck

I recently bought three Alpine MRVF407's @ $470.00 each, so the one's you mentioned should go for less than that in theory.

Rich.

well, right now they'll be running MB Quarts DSD216's..so i know theres no point spending the extra money on getting a really good amp atm
BUT, i want to get an amp now that i can use later when i upgrade my splits and not have to buy new splits AND an amp too
when upgrading my splits (in a few months) i was thinking about the $500-$700 range..would that be enough to warrant getting something better than a v12?

I dont think anything higher quality than the V12s is really necessary
another option would be a lower range Audison... PG will be out of ur price range unfourtunately

the dls classic series would be hard to beat for the price

the 4*50 bridges to 2*170 and theirs a 2*100 which would do the job nicely. both are less then $500

any of the amps discussed would drive the discus series mbq's to their best, no probs.

similarly, if you're on a tight budget, then i think you're also better off staying with such an amp to run more expensive splits when you upgrade them. that is, you're probably better off diverting the extra $200~300 for a better amp towards something like sound deadening, custom kicks/pods, or even the splits themselves. you'll get more noticably results from that.

having said that, if you can afford to spend a bit more now, then something like an audison LRx2.250 ( Web Audio Direct $690 + P&H) or a DLS Reference 100 2x50WRMS amp. the better overall quality would be nice for better splits, and their rated power would no doubt not reflect their true performance. and the alpine is a great amp too.

good luck

im using MRV-T420, retail price is $700, but i got it for 500 , i using it to run my DYN, great detail, a bit bright at high volume, n not to warm,but for $500 i think it's a very good amp (compare to my crossfire which cost me $900)

Or you could keep an eye out for something classy in the For Sale section at a pre-loved price.....

A nice Soundstream a couple years old, something like that....

i can get a LRX 4.300 for a bit more than $500 (2nd hand)..but however im just wondering how would u compare this amp bridged (2x210wrms) to the alpine v12 T420. because ur meant to lose SQ when bridging..so will a T420 then be better?
Also, if you could get a 4.300 for the same price as a 2.150, which would you get..2.150 has less power in 2 chans obviously, but 4.300 is going to be running each chan @ 2ohms..hmm

IMO, the LRx4.300 would not need to be bridged to run your splits nicely. 65WRMS per channel on tap will be quite adequate. that will leave 2 spare channels to either run the rears, or in the future consider an active 2-way front stage (one driver per channel).

i personally prefer to run a front stage amp at 4ohm rather than 2ohm, so would go against bridging a 4 channel, despite the added headroom available. pros and cons i guess. but would be worth experimenting to let your own ears decide.

$500 seems very good if in top condition. and i'd take that ahead of an alpine V12.

good luck

I have a Hertz H230 at the moment running a sub, will this be overkill for a front stage of HSK 165's. In turn I will pick up a class D for sub bass.

The question is, is the duel mono going to provide too much power for front stage or will it improve the sound at a tick over 200 rms a side, or am I better off leaving this for the sub and getting a clean smaller amp say coustic.

thanks.

I just got my Alpine MRV-F407 second hand for NZ$180. I use it to run the 4" speakers in the dash and a 10" sub. You can never have an amp that is too powerfull. If you look around, there are lots of bargains to be had if you don't mind second hand.
