when i got mine i had bought a 7969 2 days before( still have it sitting in the cupboard thats all it did). i changed from a 7949 to the 7969 and wasn't happy with the 7969 when i went back to ask some questions to the dealer i saw the 7990 and just had to have it. Anyway i run a Rockford Symmetry with 2 inputs so i had both decks in my dash with the same CD and could switch between them to hear the diff. The results: sitting in car with engine off you could pick the diff very marginally over the 7969. once driving you couldn't pick it even though my car has the crap sound deadend out of it. then i tried the radio's we'll the 7990 (F1) was like CD compared to Cassette huge diff (pitty i don't listen to radio). Its so nice to use though the volume knob is awsome and it looks sensational. I bought it cause i'm looking at the h900 processor and thought that theres no point having that then feeding it with a poor signal. Makes you wonder where to stop. my amps and speakers are fine. my rockford symmetry would be the limiting part now (S/N 94dB) and am considering changing it to a H900 $$$ but am i going to pick the difference?? when driving with raod noise, exhaust noise etc as if i can't theres no point. Fair enough in sound comps with engine off but i'm not into that at all. What i'm thinking is that i can use the autotune on the h900 to tune the car whilst driving at 100Km/H with raod noise which you can't RTA for. As most will know the tune totally changes when you hit the highway at 100+ ( Bass dissapears etc) That in itself will b worth the dollars. all i've got to do now is make my car quieter. Any ideas? In summing up i don't think that you can pic the diff btw any head unit once you spend $500 or so and up, better spent on your install unless its for looks or ease of use which is why i bought mine.

yes, we often forget that we own cars for the reason of 'driving'. so 95% of the time, i am on the road driving my car rather than sitting in it admiring my own stereo.

and there's absolutely no way to overcome the roadnoise to bring the noisefloor back down to near-silent. so indeed SQ goes out the window as soon as you start the engine, let alone drive away.

so it's true, unless you spend much time engine-off and listening to the stereo or entering SQ comps, there's not a lot of point to spending big bickies on audiophile HUs...aside from rice.

So how does my 'old girl' 7949 rate these days?

I like it but I know I'd also like a 7990 coz it looks like the 7909 from decades ago and has a KNOB!!! Take note designers- KNOB KNOB KNOB!!!
No-one likes these fiddly little buttons or rocker switches. Ok, I've had my yell. I feel much better now. Do we all hate the Volume Buttons as much as I do?

Anyway, I guess the road noise thing is really a car and tyre thing. you should hear how loud the road noise is in mine

KNOB KNOB KNOB !!! I wonder if a 7990 face could be botched up and forced onto my 7949? surely it would work...

Picture this. You are sitting at home and enjoyiong your high end home system and guy next door arcs up his lawn mower. Do you A: turn off system and turn on cklock radio or B: reach for volume and drown out mower noise ?

Point being my system sounds OK with engine off and all quiet but when driving with background noise I crank it a little harder and drown out noise. Sure I hear road noise etc when things go quiet in the music but thats no motivation to use a lesser system IMO, as a lesser system wont sound as good when cranked. My system still images etc great when loud.

Anyway the higher you go in quality equipment, trying to get audio nervana, the more it costs and the diff between a really good system and a really really good system is slight, and so wether its worth it or not is up to the one handing over the hard earned but like the signal path itself, the better it starts out, the better the results, and hence why it may be worthwile for some ppl to buy top O range gear.

The Alpine HU/proc combo is as good as it can get but is geared for the new formats like HDCD or DVD A and so if CD is all you are going to play, other HUs may be just as good and may provide better value. Hard to say.
