i have just started to make some door pods for my civic hatch, 94 model.

first off has anyone done pods for this car before? is so PM me orsomething, the help would be grat.

secondly, i've already deadened my doors and sealed off all the service hole, but i need to know if i need to seal between the pod and the inner door.

coz the pods sit a bit off the door trim and there will be space between the inner door trim and the outer door shell, if you know wot i mean.
should i seal this up or wot?

i'm gona take pics, but i duno how to post them up in here so you all can see? any help there??

one other thing, would you reccomend using body filler or fibreglass to do the job??

which is easier?

yes, definitely worth sealing any gap between the pod and door cavity. it will ensure the sound waves are couple with the door cavity and not diffused behind the trim; should make for less resonance and optimal midbass. whether it makes a big audible difference...maybe not.

maybe simply add some self-adhesive foam rubber to bridge the gap. places like clark rubber will sell by the metre some 'closed-cell' foam stripping that would be suitable. attach it to the metal door: make a circle and at as many layers as you need so when the trim/pod is in place, it seals up nicely.

a more solid option would be to use some expanding foam that can be sprayed into place to set.

thats heapz, i'll give that a try along with a some foam too. i knew that foam stuff i bought from bunnings would come to use one day.

hey shiny, do you know how i could post some pics up in this thread to show you guys the pods i'm making... tha way i could possibly get some creative critism...

thanx

i suggest creating your own picturetrail album. you can then either:

1. link the whole album within a thread ("URL" button)
2. embed the URL of any pictures you've uploaded into a thread ("image" button) so the picture comes up

ok dude... well its looking good

but there is a substantial amount of trim covering the actual cone of the speaker, which will block a lot of sound.

Not to put a doner on you, but unless you clar some of th trim around the face of the speaker then angling would not really give you all that much improovement in imaging. Are you going to cut it away?

i guess it's a compromise. cutting up the trim then means you have to reconstitute it in some way to look 'stock' again, so major work.

on the other hand, slight blockage of the woofer is much less crucial than say a tweeter. so it's worth auditioning it and seeing for yourself. maybe try it with the trim in place then try it without the trim.

for the sake of avoiding major custom work, i think having the slight 'block' will be fine. but you'll probably need to sounddeaden the back of the trim extensively to avoid rattles and resonance.

the pods are nicely angled given the restricted space there. i would suggest, without seeing it in person, reinforcing them as best you can to ensure they are very solid. that could include adding more self-adhesive SDer around the edges, fibreglass, or more screws.

nice one.

i've finished both frames of the door pods, and i plan to fibre glass the pods to ensure the are sturdy.

the pods will actually sit on top of the door trim if you know wot i mean... so there wont be any blockage of the speakers as such. a bit hard to explain.

i will take a few more progressive pics to show you guys wot i'm talking bout.

ah, now i see how it will come together.

should be good. again, ensure it's well-secured to the door trim, which will benefit from extensive sound deadening. then bridge the gap between the pod and metal with some form of seal.

good luck

will do shiny...
wot do you think, ok for a first attempt at pods and for that matter fibreglassing too... hahah

can you give me a few good ideas on how i would secure this nice and tight to the door trim??

and one other thing how long does FB take to dry, its been 4 hours and its still moist as...
i think i might have not put enought catalyst..

i think the easiest means of securing them will be via screws from the back of the door trim into the back of the pod. this however, secures the pod to the trim, but won't really secure the pod to the door/metal.

ideally, you'd use screws from the front, passing from the pod, through the trim, then into the metal door. the worst part about that would be an exposed screw-head (cosmetics). but you could trim over it at the end, paint the screwhead to camouflage it, or use screws that let you snap on a plastic button-cover.

if you only secure the pod from behind to the trim, then obviously ensure the trim is very secure against the door. that may be tricky too, as it will be difficult to add in extra screws or clips.

this may take some work, but you could:
*attach mdf to the door similar to your original speaker ring in the first set of photos you posted; this will be placed between the door and trim
*use long speaker screws that pass through the speaker, the new pod-mdf, then into the mdf already attached to the door; this will ensure the pod speaker/pods is firmly screwed to 'something' that is itself secured to the door

then use that expanding foam to fill all the gaps between the pod and door. obviously do this at the very end before attaching the speaker coz you'll have to 'break' the foam seal if you remove the trim again.
