I currently have two 12" Alpine ZR subs in my revised system and finding they are really loud and have fantastic Bass but they are overpowering the rest of my system which i set up more for SQ. The subs were the only thing I didnt revise other then mounting them more securely. Now what I am wondering is as I have Focal Polykevlar 165k 6.5" speakers in the front and Boston Rally 6.5" 2 ways in the back what size subs should I look at? I am thinking about either two 10s or one 12" sub. What would be best for good SQ while retaining decent Bass for daily driving? I am swinging towards a single 12" sub for the less weight (my car is a lard **** VX SS commodore!) and for the cost as I was hoping to stay around the $400 street price. However I am told that two 10s are perfect for my system? I have considered the JL Audio W3 subs but I am concerned that the 700wrms from my MTX Thunder 500D sub amp will be to much for a single 12" of that ratting. What do you guys think/recommend?

Well there is always turning the bass amp gain down......
A mate uses a 12" Type R in a 48 litre sealed box with Focal 165K front stage in his Peugeot and it works beautifully with 300 rms to the sub.
A quality sub and enclosure is the key, the power is just nice headroom with a decent sub set-up.
Other candidates could be an IDQ12v2 or PG Ti12, all these nice at a fair price.
Personally I prefer a single 12 to dual 10s.

Thanks for the reply Critter. Yeah I realise I could cut the gains on the sub amp but I was thinking it is more the nature of these subs to be a bit boomy, I am thinking more of an SQ sub might be the Go, however you may be correct about the enclosure being wrong however I dont know whether it is worth doing a new enclosure for these subs if they are not what I will ultimately end up with.

have u tried just running 1 of your 12's instead of 2 to see how it sound, just for starters?
i'd think it more likely the size/setup of your box would have more to do with your subs boomy nature
no point spending extra money on equipment when u have all, if not more than u need already..
i'd be looking at the install of your subs and whats cheaper to fix than taking out 2 subs just 2 buy another in the hope it'll all get better

however, subs have seemed to come a long way in the past 6 years or so, with premium subs suiting nice small boxes and offering great SQ and output/volume when plenty of power's on tap.
hmmm, maybe a nice phoenix gold Ti12D titanium series could be a goer? (from online store). i'm waiting for someone to report back on how good these are!!!

[/indent]I was thinking along the same lines as this Shiny, I am thinking that with all the great subs out there at the moment I can find one to suit my needs. The ZRs were what I wanted at the time but they are now a little to boomy for the SQ I am mow interested in. I was considering the Focal Pollkevlar 33k but it is out of my price range. I am now looking at the following 12" subs:
JL Audio 12w3v2
Boston Pro 12.5
However I am interested in listening to the subs critter mentioned but I dont know anything about them. Can anyone tell me about these subs and where i can listen to the IDQ12v2 or the PG Ti12 12" subs in Sydney?

i've heard a couple boston pro subs, and they suit SQ applications extremely well. nice smooth, authoritative subbass.
of course the box and amp will help dictate that. but they're not a typical 'doof' sub without finesse.
no doubt critter will have his PG Ti's up and running pretty soon for a demo to all NSW folk.

[/quote]well i had mine put in last week and yeah im very happy with them overall, heappss of low end and they are lovely and accurate... that was until my ex installer tried running them in in the space of 5 hours with 20hz tracks
now im waiting on money for a recoil but hey, they still sound nice even now
for the money they're great, although i must admit im still extremely fond of Type R's, if it wasnt for my PG fetish atm i'd be going type R's without thinking twice
