What’d be better for SQL purposes?
1X JL Audio 13W7D1.5 driven by a JL 1000/1
or
2X JL Audio 12W6v2D4 driven by a pair of JL 500/1

both will be in a ported box matching the JL recommended volume.

and at a guess, what kinda SPL could I expect from either setup in a XF sedan?

couldn't you could use the 1000/1 for either setups? it would be cheaper.

no, the 12W6v2's are dual 4 ohm, and with 2 of them i'd have to run them at 1 ohm or 4 ohm, and the 1000/1 isnt 1 ohm stable, and i want to tun the amp(s) at as low an impedance as possible to screw every lil bit of power out of them

but they are regulated.
i know there is a difference with those amps running in 2 and 4 ohms. but not much
but yes 2x500/1 will have a bit more totaly power in either 2 or 4.

higher impedance higher dampning factor

from what i have read. a 13W7 should have a slight lead in sq and spl. but you really need more than 1000rms for it to really pull away.

i had a quick look at sounddomain forums. if you haven't already, do a search on w6 vs w7 and you'll get quite a few posts of interest.

good luck.

Go the two 12W6 subs for the amp set up you have in mind definitely.

We stock and get to play with daily, the subs you are asking about and so I speak from experience here.

just as a variation, would it change much if i put the 13W7 in a ported box, and the 12W6v2's in a sealed box (i'm limited with space, and a sealed box for 2X12W6v2's is nearly the same size as a ported box for a 13W7)

I'd get a 13w7 with the 1000wrms monoblock.

That system will be very very good.

Is budget an issue?
Why not compromise and get two 12W7s?

1X13W7 ported: 67.3L ($1998)
2X13W7 sealed: 106.2L ($3996)
2X12W7 sealed: 77.88L ($3396)
2X12W7 ported: 99.12L ($3396)
2X12W6v2 sealed: 70.8L ($1996)
2X12W6v2 ported: 85L ($1996)
2X13W6v2 sealed: 92L ($?)
2X13W6v2 ported: 106.2L ($?)

now, if I use a box with any more than 90L I’m gonna have a serious lack of space in my boot (don’t ask why) so I’m limited to the selection above (using JL’s recommended specs) my initial thoughts were for a pair of 12W6’s or a single 13W7 just to give me that little more room as well as being in the same kinda budget
At the moment a pair of 12W7’s looks the best option, but if budget is a concern, a pair of W6’s or a single 13W7 might be the go.

The W7 is superior in terms of SQ.

A pair of W6s would probably be louder on a meter but who cares, you won't win any SPL comps in an XF!

A pair of $1000 subs will sound like a $1000 sub, only louder. A $2000 sub will always sound like a $2000 sub.

Have a look around at some other high end woofers, I personally think the W7 is a tad expensive for what it is, even with it's flashy looks.

i know i'm not gonna be seriously competitive in SPL comps, but i wouldnt mind being in the mid-high 140's, besides, who says you cant hit high numbers in a big car????? and before you ask, no, i'm not gonna go for DD subs.... i'm very impressed with JL gear in general

I am in the same situation as you interceptor.

i was tossing up between the 2x12W6v2 or the single 13W7.. i was gonna run them off a PPI PC21400 (1x1400wrms @4ohm) and im going to choose the W7..
I have been told to go DD as well, but i didnt want to 'blend' in with the majority and i have always had a soft spot for the JL's, used them in the past..

to be honest, i would go the W7's..
they are better than the W6v2 in build quality, etc.. as well as handling more power.. Not to mention the smaller boxes..

Go the W7..

I agree that the W7 is the better quality of the two but what about cone area?

Two 12W6's would be better in this regard and you can use a sealed box and get the SQ side of things right as well (although, if you follow JL's box specs to the letter, their ported boxes do sound very good)

Rattle..

i WAS considering, and now im gonna get the W7.. the L7's and the ZR600 are coming out end of year..

Winno..
i believe that a better single sub would be better than 2 of the lower model.. ok, twice the cone area, but also half the power to each sub..
by using the single W7 you can use a single box and still have boot space and lots of power, where the twin would need twice the enclosure volume.. i can go on but i wont..

we'll see how i go with my W7 next year..
mind you, i'll have 1400wrms goin to it..
