I have a budget of about $300 and, up until 2day, i was going to get a pair of Pioneer 6", now i know most of you are going to say,"don't be an idiot, Pioneer are crap" and recommend other brands to me but i aint gunna change my mind cuz i really do like Pioneer. Anyways i was reading a Poll on here and somebody said, "you can get a pair of Alpine splits for around $300 and they are the best splits ive heard!" Now help me out here ppl! Which splits should i go for?

haha! You will be swamped by poeple telling you what to but. Some will say the Hertz HKS's others will say focal K2's I say infinity. But WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT EARS. You need to go into a store, take your favourite test C.D. ( or just your fav, cd) and then test test test. For 300 you would also be buying some pretty serious 2nd hand gear in the for sale section if you wanted to go that way. If not then BARGIN!!! 10-15% MINIMUM off R.R.P. should get upto 20%. If you like the pioneers, then don't let anyone turn you off them, it's going into your car not theirs.

P.S.
Welcome to CAA and SQ. Just stay away from those S.P.L. apes j/k

i use to aim for 10-15% rrp minimum as well, but these days melbourne dealers have become such assholes in terms of pricing. I hear interstate members getting awesome prices for products, and then when i go down to the shops i get these rediculous quotes even after haggling. Thats another story tho.

Choosing speakers are hard, because its not always what you hear is what you get. Something may sound good on the board, but sound **** your doors. I think youll be happy with any reasonble speakers (hertz, bostons, pg ect) as long as the installation is sound

 now there's a contradiction if ever a read one! :P

yeah, go with your ears! listen for quality of treble and its clarity and hopefully lack of any sibilence/harshness. assess the midrange and listen for vocals with a natural sound and smoothness. then consider the midbass and how much punch is in them.

don't necessarily choose by brand or even cost. and not by power handling or fancy specs.

good luck :)

eh?? :?

You don't want to "hear" that Pioneer are cr@p, but you've "heard" that Alpine are better?

Forget brand shopping. Go listen to as many speakers in your budget as possible. If they're in a sound board, close your eyes and ask the saleman to switch between a few different pairs: you might be shocked that the more popular speakers aren't necessarily the better sounding option.

Cheers

I think I'm a little over supreme setups :(

6 months with a new car, and I've got an amp and a set of front speakers.

Or I could just be lazy.

HAHA You want the Pioneer and won't change your mind, yet you're asking for reccomendations

Like dasherhalo said, listen to the speakers with disregard for the brands or what you've heard about them. When shopping for my splits I was surprised to see a pair of VDO splits (sorry don't know model, but he said $300) outperform both the blue and slivercone Alpine splits, and on par with the Hertz HSK165's  Mind you this was my impression, yours may be different.
In the end I chose some JL VR splits for under you budget, and as very happy with them.

Other ones that may be of interest are the Phoenix Gold Tantrum X splits, they are considered to be very good also and are available from DB F EVER

thanks for all you input, the thing about Boston and Phoenix Gold and HSK's and all the high end brands is that nowhere around i live sells those. The car audio stores seem to be filled with all the Xplod, Pioneer, Kenwood etc. All the popular brands. I live on the gold coast and if someone could point me in the right direction, it would be a big help :D

I would recommend having a listen to Infinity if you can. I've been a fan for a long time and find them to be smooth, warm and accurate, but that is me....

If u are interested in them, a store called Macnevins in rockhampton is doing some pretty good deals on them, for example perfect 6.1 splits for $515 and r.r.p is $900!!! i'm spewing cause they cost me $800.......

But as others have said, listen to lots with your favourite discs and forget about what brand u like, it will open your eyes.

Regardless of what u buy, the install is the most crucial part, so be prepared to spend the money on getting it done right. If u don't u might as well go for the supercheap special.

Cheers :) :caa:

Try incar on the goldcoast as well.

http://www.incaraudio.com.au/incar_home.html

They are moving to a new location on harvest road (not sure on the suburb). I tried visiting them about 6 weeks ago and couldn't get in but they stock DD boston PG and a couple others. Might be worth a look.

Happy hunting :)
