Hey all.

I'm starting to save up for my next improvement on my car.

My current setup is what is in my sig. I'm aiming for SQ, so what kind of sub and amp would I be looking at for around $1200 for both ? I know it aint very much. But it's all I can afford ATM.

That doesn't include wiring, boxing or deadening. I can do that myself with a mate.

I listen to mainly slow RnB and slow trance. So I was thinking of getting a 15" over a 12".

Thanks for any help and ideas.

I just brought a amp and sub today, I think it is a good combo, why dont you look at something the same or simlar, A Alpine MRD-M500 $799 retail and a 12inch Type R 4ohm voice coils $399 retail. I had an expensive sub designed for SPL and have now changed, the alpine Type r is a good all rounder.

Seeing as you are using Focal why not try out some of their subs.
other brands to try would be Image Dynamics, Boston Pro, Alpine "R" type, Eclipse, Rockford Fosgate, Dynaudio.
See if your mate Drew will let you demo them in your car.
As for amps try Alpine MRDM500, or any of the brands listed above all very high standard.

You should be able to pick up a Zapco Ref 500M and an Image Dynamics IDV3 12" sub for around $1200.

given you've got an alpine V12 multichannel amp, then consider getting the matching monobloc as mentioned. the MRD-M500 would fit the budget nicely and offer heaps of power for a quality single 12". if going a single sub, it will need to be 2ohm to get the best power from that amp.

for the sub, maybe consider one suitable to a ported box design that may suit your music tastes:
*image dynamics IDQ12v3-D4
*JL audio 12W3-D4

this should be fine rather than a 15". the bigger subs can be fine, but obviously require bigger boxes.

Try sticking with the same brand for amp and sub. You will be able to guarantee a great result. Try a Rockford Fosgate Power series 351m (1 x 400w RMS mono amp @ 2 ohm with remote level control inc.) driving a HE2 15" (Dual 4 ohm VC sub).
Use the correct size enclosure and you will get everything you want and more. Price is spot on too.

Well, hopefully this sale goes through that I'm going at ATM. 15" Type R sub ... $300 ? Or is that to much ?

given they retail for far more, it could be a very good buy. of course it depends on the sub's condition. but it should be fine; it's either fried (which you wouldn't expect!) or it's perfectly good.

Well, I just started a downpayment on a 15" Type R sub from the trademart here.

I'm going to mate it with a M500 hopefully.

Excuse my ignorance on this, but how will going with the same brand for subs and amps "guarantee a great result" ? Do companies that make subs and amps 'match' their products so that they will work perfectly together?

RTTZ it doesn't guarentee a great result, but manufactures will try and match their product range up.

To keep as much profit within the company as possible!
Absolutely nothing to do with "how great a brand matched combination will work."

Companies make more coin selling their products seperately rather than pushing the two together; thats just icing on the cake. Its the consumer who buys into the "matched branded system" and they love it

There are many instances of products which perform less than favourably within their own brand. If you want examples just ask :hehe:

How do manufactures' try to match up their products so that by sticking with one brand - lets remove " guarantee a great result" and say, 'gives you a better result' ?

I'm sorry but I really don't understand that statement... how does a sub know wich brand amp /wire /HU /x-over/ pre amp /eq/etc. is sending the signal thru ?
