Hey,

Currently I have a set of Dyn 240GT's... I love the sound of these, but the xover/tweeter protection comes in when I crank up a good song :( I have 200Wrms per side and it sounds clean, I just think i'm reaching the limits of the speakers. They are installed in stock locations, so woofers down low in doors and tweeters in dash.

I don't want to do a custom install, I would just want to replace this set with something that sounds similar but louder. Mixing and matching components isn't very appealing either.

Any ideas from people who've heard the Dyn's?

Cheers :)

My Crossfire Horns are really smooth, even with no EQ.
A pair of these and some good midbass drivers DD perhaps and you will have plenty of output.
The horns I have kept up with 8 15s with no probs.

I don't think they'll fit in the stock VT locations though :P

The horns should bolt in under the glove box and under the dash on the drivers side with no major dramas.

If you want some real balls for your front end you may have to steer away from mounting thins in stock locations.

Unfortunatly tweeters can never really get loud.
This is why they use Horns in PA.

Car ones just have a much smoother response.

try sourcing some PA tweeters, they often use horn loaded drivers.
something like the fostex ft17h
available from http://www.syntec.com.au/
(in chatswood, NSW)
they're a 30W (music) tweeter
but with 98.5db sensitivity.
ouput from 5-50Khz, and very flat output between 6-21Khz.

i was quoted about $90 per tweeter.
i have the PDF of the tweeter's specs if you'd like to see it... just PM your email and i'll send it through.

p.s. these will probably require custom mounting, but they don't have a big horn troat like convential horns...
they have an 87mm diameter, 50mm mounting depth.. the magnet diameter is 63mm...

now that i think about it, you'd need to run 2 pairs of these in parallel to get the right impedance for your passive crossover, which would mean an extra 3db, ontop.
the Xover won't cut out until you've sent more than 60wrms to the tweeters, so you can run them to their limits...

NUTTTR ran smoe silly amount of power to a set of Dyn esotar's. i'm sure you're will handle more than they're currently getting.

So the tweeter protection only comes on? One approach could be to drive the tweeters active (or in fact the whole setup) to work out the threshold the tweeters can tolerate.

Depends whether you want to replace tweeters or merely look for different ways to work with your current setup....an alternative to think about.

Thanks for the replies :)

What is happening with my setup is that I am turning the fronts up louder to get more midrange/midbass and the xovers are deciding to cut out my tweeters so all i'm left with is woofers running :(

I don't really want louder tweeters as i've gone with these because the tweeters are nice and soft, I just don't want the bloody xover turning my tweeters off when I want to crank it.

2 pairs of tweeters would be quite a mission to mount without cutting up the car... Plus it'd be too much treble for me.

Active sounds like an ok way to go, but that means another amp as i'm only running 2 chan and a mono amp. And i'll probably end up cooking the tweeters then.

That sounds like my best option, I was really hoping for just a speaker upgrade though :)

What sort of costs are involved for horns?
What sort of power do they require?
Can you just pair them with a normal woofer?
Could you even hook them up to a passive xover or are they too efficient for that?

Other options

Get an eq so you can get the sound you like out of you existign setup.

Remove the tweeter protection from the xover.

Get new xover's? I ran the dyn's @ 5khz xover (MD100's not esotars bob! :P).....
My midbass tho was different and went nicely to 5khz, so maybe the dyn's can't do that, but i was running 2x350 and it was happy with that, they never cut out or burnt out...
I was running 2x200 and the amp used to clip alot, so i was definately running the power through them

Horns generally range between $500 a pair and $15000 a pair for car audio.

I bought my Crossfire Eliptihorns really cheap, you could probably find some for under a grand.
ELH-2 is the model I chose.

Use the Dyn Tweeters in the factory locations as
imaging tweeters and use the Dyn Mids up to about 800hz or 1k run this fully active and you wont look back!

The horns will be loud and clear, the dyn tweeters will add height to the stage and the mids will handle plenty of power if they are bandpassed from say 80hz to 1khz.

Another good thisg is if you use horns you can buy "recone" diaphram replacement kits for them if they go up in smoke. (this doesn't happen all that often though)
