Mostly, SQ is subjective and this is why I prefer SPL as what the meter says, is what the score is!
It comes down to what the judges like the sound of or what the RTA says, however the RTA section of scoring for SQ may not be weighted heavily or an RTA may not be used for SQ judging at all!

For me to judge a SQ system i will listening to song that have strong recording with a female vocal...
when she sing should notice the instrument behind and the vocal is crytal clear. Turn the volume up shouldn't have any unwanted noise and there should be a separation of instrument between each driver...Tat's what i call SQ !

Bloody good post. Agree 100%

Andy Jones, IASCA Street X SQL is code for "I half ass everything." Basically you are saying you are not loud enough to do SPL, and have no idea what it takes to do Sound Quality. So you meet in the middle with a quiet system that sounds like ass. Good job at being mediocre.

Although I can see why the subjectivity of SQ judging can be a problem, but at the same time, I don't think it is that bad - the end result is the system will be listened to by people. So it is more practical to do it that way. Also keeping in mind that ears can often be easily fooled in certain ways. To have some sort of mechanical system to judge, would require a large amount of knowledge about our hearing that we don't yet have - much of the knowledge we do have is being used towards the aim of transparent (ie you can't hear the difference) lossy compression for music.
Obviously, you need very well trained un-biased judges or the judging will be very poor.
Also, RTAs are rarely used in judging SQ these days basically because they are somewhat one-dimentional and thus do not give you the full picture of the frequency response. Remember that you have two ears (that would typically not be mounted in the center of the speakers) that will be listening to sound coming from multiple sources, not to mention the reflections/resonances involved.

If in doubt, do a search and then ask questions!
