As the topic line suggests, I'm looking for a pair of 6.5" coaxials to go in my rear doors, they will be amped later (prob. about 50 wrms each), and the doors will be deadened. I'm looking for reasonable midbass punch with smooth highs (I don't like hard dome tweets)

Any suggestions for good ones up to $300?

I was just about to recommend these but I think they use metal tweeters. I used them as rear fill in my old car and they are soon to become rear fill in a friends car. The tweeters did not sound harsh at all so I still suggest a listen if possible. They are less than $200.

What's the general opinion on Alpine type R's?

It's been a long time since i've bought coaxials, so I'm not sure what the new ranges are like...

I say

When you buy speakers, buy them from a company that specializes in making speakers, and when you buy amps buy them from a specialist amp company etc.

My point being is that Alpine make good HU's and possibly some nice amps. Their speakers will do the job and better than some real low end gear but in comparison to other brands they might not be up to the task for the same money.

In the end you have to go and listen to the speakers for yourself and see what you like, if you like the sound of the alpines, then buy them. After all it is you who has to listen to it so why buy what someone else likes if you do not like it?

Yeah, that's a perfectly valid point. And I'm gonna end up picking the speakers which sound the best to me, but my problem at the moment is that I don't know what is out there to choose from at the moment.

I generally find that if i walk into a store and say I'm looking for a pair of speakers for around $300, the salesman simply pulls out the pair that he has been encouraged to upsell, rather than objectively showing me the available options.

So yeah, the purpose of this thread is to find out what's available, and then I'll go make up my own mind.

Oh yeah, and I completely agree that alpine speakers may not present the best value for money, I was just curious how others felt about the Type R's because they fall into my price range.

Sweet dude,

Just go and listen to as many speakers as you possibly can.
If they are a reputable brand and they sound good, then go for them.

Also check out Hertz, Focal (Access Line), Infinity, JL Audio, Kicker, MB Quart, you should be able to get something in these brands at your price point. Mind you, please do not limit yourself to these only.
