Hey All i drive a 1999 Excel GX,
as i have been mentioning im putting splits up front and have my heart set on avi's.. However my map pocket / door trim isnt overly accomodating and there is next to no depth into the doors themselves because of a freakin window rail right behind... i have a few choices...

i can
a) buy the lowest end 5" driver and get Metrosound to shoehorn it in
B) but a higher model 5" driver (heck its only $100 more and 2mm deeper, so if theyre shoehorning make it worthwhile!)
c) go up another range and get a 4" driver, that i can fit to the original speaker door mounts.... ($130 more then the lowest 5" driver)

the drivers concerned are
a) XL130
B) EL130
c) LX100

see http://www.avisound.com

what do u guys think would be the best alternative for sq? i mean im spendin big bux ~$500 on a set of splits (heck its alot of money for me!) and i wanna make the best decision... The 4" speakers sound pretty damn amazing for what they are!!!

The latter two have big magnets for the speaker size, and use aluminium voice coils, whereas the XL130 is copper if that makes any difference...

The rest of the system compromises AVI HF-13N tweeters sony XM754SX amp and clarion DXZ835MP h/u..

thnx in advance,
Ben N

P.S. Im leaning more towards the third option

or you could do the smart thing and buy pro pods so you can accomidate the bigger speakers :)

nah my map pocket encorporates the speaker cover... so my door trim will have holes all over it! and no map pocket...

Alternate thinking: go to a wrecker and pick up a set of excel door trims. shouldn't be much at all - $15-20 a side.

Then you'll feel much better about butchering your trims!!!

I think I'm a little over supreme setups :(

6 months with a new car, and I've got an amp and a set of front speakers.

Or I could just be lazy.

already thought that one through too!!
as i specified in orignal post mine is a GX not a standard sprint...
much nicer door trim, and UBER RARE at wreckers :( plus my current ones are fairly butchered too so yeah, i dont wanna swiss cheese them any more :(

lol if any one finds a 99 GX set of door trims at a wrecker, ill give dem 50% ontop of what they cost ($50 normally)...

i cant use the sprint trims coz i got electric windows, and sprint doesnt so there will be a hole in the trim...

i think im gonna get the 4" ones, they sound bloody awesome! i have a sub anyways, so i dont really need bass outa the spilts

O another factor is that i wanna maintain the original look, dont really fancy wild door pods etc etc...

6" make midbass, 4" won't and a 10/12" sub won't either... I'd get my fronts as big as possible(within reason).

6" is just right for a midbass..and you will find a huge different with the 4"
I used to have 5 3/4" midbass, they sounded great but then I upgraded to some 6.5" midbass and they sound even greater!!

Wait till you see the door trims I've done for the VIBE demo car (it's an excel) and I even have to say they look pretty shmick, although I've left out the pockets which can always be added at a later date with ample room as your quite aware.

I should get the pics soon or Fhrx might post them when the car is finished tomorrow afternoon (HOPEFULLY!!!) :D

I've got an Excel and it's not a Sprint either....and mate, something can be DEFINATELY done to accomodate bigger speakers. I've actually put in 7" drivers in mine....

pfffft, you COULD put in 12" drivers but I think he wants to keep it looking fairly stock ;) That said you should be able to fit 6" speakers into stock locations without too many dramas - but if you aren't going to build pods etc then your midbass response will suffer because you aren't using a sealed enclosure etc.

i guess ill just start doin a bit more saving, go in with a wad of cash and get the boiz @ metrosound to do it! HighPingBastard did u use the original map pocket thingo or what??? how the F**K did u squeeze a 7" in... i got 6.5" drivers in there atm and the trim does not cover it properly, theres a 1cm gap between the map pocket and the trim at the end of the speaker grille part..... ok so i was thinkin i wanted the EL130... but u guys are pushing the idea of a 6" driver, am i better off getting an XL160? (the lower end model 6.5" driver) all the avi speakers sound excellent, but i am a bit "iffy" about buyin the cheapest line...

Thanks guys for all ur input keep the ideas / pictures coming please! i can post a pic of the trims if u guys havent seen a gx trim before....

I own some AVI's BSM 3 ways and 2 two ways and have heard all the other AVI series speakers.

If you can stretch your budget get the EL 160 splits.

Car audio is a drug..

Or should i return the tweeters i have,
and go for Morel Dotech II splits...

I currently have AVI HF-13N Tweeters that were $150 capped
i wanted to get AVI XL-160 which is $300

both of which are the lowest end avi stuff, with no crossover..!!

I could have a mid range set of morels for that moulah!
