I use an Eclipse 8454. It states it has the ability to save sound quality settings to a memory stick. The bloody thing doesnt work and never has. For some reason I pressed a rogue button in the middle of EQing and EVERYTHING got wiped out. Time alignment settings, crossover settings, subtle EQ peaks/troughs. The whole lot...

To say I'm slightly pissed off is an understatement as its taken me months to get the setup sounding the way it did.

Note to everyone. If you cant save settings, log each and every one for future reference (I did this to a certain extent but I improved upon it - the settings I have written down are old). It will save you a big headache.

Like motor racing...data is very valuable...I know hardcore competitors like Sam Pasino keep a log of all settings. He gets a flat battery or whatever and he is back where he was a few minutes later. I have seen other competitors loose settings and be stuffed at judging time, Sure a note pad and pen are old skool but priceless if something like this happens

The only good news when this happens is that it wont take as long to get it right as it did the first time as you now have a better idea of whats right...small comfort I know but I have no doubt you will keep a log from now on

what i dont get...

i recently bought a 2nd hand aftermarket engine computer... it hadnt been used in at least 5 or 6 years. the map that had previously been put on there was still there in all its glory, every little detail programmed in.

why do i mention this?

the other day i had to disconnect my battery and i lost my radio presets and my EQ settings. WHY DONT HEAD UNITS HAVE NON VOLATILE MEMORY???

it makes no sense at all theres almost no data to store eiter.. like... i doubt you'd even need 1mb to back up all settings... i simply dont see why the manufacturers continue to overlook this very basic design flaw. if engine computers were made like head untis we'd all have to teach our cars to idle again every time we disconnected the batteries (well.. mirage owners have to do that anyway.. haha...)

sorry i'll stop complaining now...

i think some HUs have some memory. with my alpine 7998 it retains such things as radio stations, etc that are programmed into them. can't say the same for the alpine PXA processors i've used as they lose all settings.

ikerr, Eclipse just called me in relation to this thread. (they don't have an account to post). They fully understand what you are talking about and the problem you have experienced with saving your settings. Whilst I am not familiar with this model I cannot explain it to you in full, but its something to do with having to format the memory stick / or create directories before trying to transfer.

In any case, they asked that you please call the Eclipse hotline tomorrow (wednesday) during business hours and they will be happy to explain the process. The hotline is 1800 211 411

:thumb: to Eclipse Australia for their help :)

On my HU, when you press 'EQ', it goes through some factory settings and wipes out ALL custom settings..

For some reason, whenever i let someone in my car, they have the urge to press EQ, but now ive done it so many times i remember all my settings off the top of my head.

I think it should be that all HU keep their memory, unless you choose to press the 'reset' button youself.

bottom line is.... as per usual.... expense

non volatile memory = $'s - they could even add a little 1F cap to the board to keep the memory alive but no that's $'s too.

My HX-D2 came with a few pages in the back of the book for manually recording all the settings.
The thing is, it just takes so much time to reprogramme the whole lot in, especially when you're running an active system.
And Clarion units aren't exactly the most ergonomic like Alpine's products are.

Good luck setting it all back up though.
