Okay, I bought a Alpine SWR-1241d Type R 12" dual 4ohm voice coil sub.
Rated at 300wrms/1000w peak.
Into this I have my MRV-1005 running each VC off one chan, according to the birthsheet, this is giving out 149wrms per chan on 14.4v at 4ohms.

Is this too much pwr?

Box is a 1c.ft/28litres sealed prefab by Beva.
I have the LP filter on the Deck @ 80hz and the LP on the amp at 80hz as well. Gear is installed in a 98 Magna sedan. Have tried rear loading angles etc but seems to sound better facing into the cabin with the ski portal open.

When I crank it, the sub seems to "hollow out" in sound when it hits, this is mainly listening to classic sorta rock, ie Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Pink Floyd, Rammstein, Live, Powderfinger and also with some dance/Top40 type music played as well.

I'm seriously contemplating chucking back in my S series 12" I just rmved as it sounds better....mind you it was getting 600wrms.

Any suggestions?
Something has got to be done...lol.

is the sub properly sealed with the box - so no air leaks? i presume so, but try and check.

how new is the sub? brand new? give it time to run-in, as subs, more than other speakers, require more run-in time to loosen up, then you get the nice low-end subbass that's smooth and tight, not boomy and flat.

amp xovers can be difficult to be exact with the setting. try turning off the amp xover and just relying on the HU LP filter; just in case the amp one is set lower than you think (so alternatively, turn the setting up higher, to say 100Hz).

i don't think it's cos the box is too small. cos it may be 1cuft 'gross', but once you put the sub into it, you lose a bit of volume, so it may end up around 0.9cuft. that shouldn't make any real difference.

there's no reason why this sub shouldn't sound better than the type-S. something isn't quite right, and it may be as simple as run-in time.

as the amp puts out 300W x 2 @ 2 ohms ( as opposed to 150W x 2 @ 4 ohms), wouldn't a dual 2 ohm sub have been a better choice, then the sub would still be seeing the full 600W the amp is capable of, rather than only 300W.

You should of got the DUAL 2ohm woofer that way you could of bridged the amp and gave the woofer 600wrms

You'll find that the BEVA isn't sealed at the STUPID speaker terminal they put on. Silicone or liquid nails seal it there AROUND the rim, just don't cover the terminals.

That's a prefab box for you. Custom boxes are in most cases much better for that reason. You can try covering the terminals up with plasterseen (however you spell it) and pour fibreglass resin in the box and make sure you get it all over the walls of the box trying to keep it reasonably the same consistancy all round. Try to leave the resin for a while (NOT long enough for it to harden in the container) then pour it in while it thinkens up.

28 litres is TOO small for that sub!
35 litres is what I built my Type R's too... and my friend has his in 35 litres also, he's a Linkin Park freak and I tell you what, Linkin Park ROCKS in his car.

And don't be shy on power with the Type R.. I was gonna give mine 900wrms! ;)

why you guys say that something is too small just from reading the alpine recommended enclosure guide???

i got told by a friend that worked in alpine to build an 18 litre box for the SWR 10 inch, and i have to admit that the SWR 10 sounded a gazzilion times better in the smaller enclosure than it ever did in the recommended enclosure...

PLEASE guys, either you have tried or you havent, but dont just quote what it says in the owners manuals as they dont always work well for certain genre...

the bostons i've got, the recommended is 1/2 a cube for the PRO 10.5, i ran them in .88 cube boxes and they also sounded fantastic with a wide variety of genre, and YES I listen to everything :) you dont believe me then come and see my collection from ballet to rock :)

You'd hadly even notice a difference going from 28 to 35 litres sealed.

I've installed dozens of Type Rs. I've never liked them at all.

The box that worked best for the 12" is 1.5+ ported, tuned to 34Hz.

DD Phil
I ain't disagreeing with ya but I've heard the subs in a 35 litre box and decent power (600+wrms put into it) and I didn't complain.. yet this thread is showing a complaint in a 28 litre box....
Then again... it may also be run-in time as shiny suggested.
It's all trial and error, I'm just suggesting what I thought sounded good from my own personal experience.

I haven't heard a Type R in a ported enclosure to date, so that would be interesting to here...

Okay, played with it a bit today, ie xovers, gain H/U settings, sounds ok now down low output but as soon as you crank it, still sounds like ****e.

I got the Dual 4ohm as it was a clearence item and only paid $260 new RRP was $399. Believe me Im spewin now........shouldve got the MTX 5000 series I was gonna get.

I got the birthsheet mixed up, its 149wrms at 12V. Doesnt say 14.4v output.
So its not lack of power, going by that it'd have to be giving 175wrms at least to each VC.
Box seems tight, cant feel any air coming out.

Ive been told by no less than 5 ppl that Alpine specs are crud and a 28l box is perfect for this sub.

i'm not sure what 'mode' setting you have on the amp:
*1+2 stereo
*1 (mono)
*1+2 summed

i think they're the options, so ensure you select the last one. worth removing the sub and using some silicone as ICACHA suggested. you wanna make sure it's 100% sealed.
