Hi Gents...

I've spoken to a few people in regards to this and have some opinions. I'm looking at upgrading my 12inch subs (Jaycar) to a pair of new subs. I'm limited by a budget or around $450ish for the pair of subs, but I don't mine buying good quality used gear either.

The subs will be living in my 95ish L ported enclosure sharing the same airspace. Dual 85mm ID ports will be used and are adjustable in length for tuning. Volume can be slightly reduced by shortening the box slightly if need be.

Running the subs is an Orion 2250sx, which I'm led to believe will deliver around 1000WRMS into a single 1/2ohm load (I'm not exactly sure here as there's confliciting info on the net).

I listen to all types of music, from Dire Straights, through RnB, so am after an all round sub, but I can't help but turn it up also, so want something to play loud.

Front stage atm keeps up with the subbass okay with some headroom, so I'm not too worried that I'll easily overpower this.

I have also searched around here about 12's too, but figured it would be best to start a new thread.

Advice will be muchly appreciated :)

Cheers

Ben

if you've only got $450, i'd suggest 1 higher quality sub over 2 lesser quality (read: cheaper) subs.

for $450, you could get a few nice 2nd hand subs e.g. Boston Pro

I've already got the box built, and am more then happy with how it performs, I don't think I'd be happy with another style of box to be honest as I can't see anything being as efficient as this one.

I realise it would probably be better to get a superior quality single 12inch sub, rather then two cheaper ones. I'm fairly happy with the sytem atm, jsut it get's real loose when asked to work hard, which I believe to be the subs distorting. I'm not sure how to tell without a CRO whether it's the subs or amp distorting for certain?

2 X Phoenix Gold X-max subs would be a great way to go. They handle 500rms each and provice a 2ohm load which would suit the amp.
There is 2for sale in the "For Sale" section $450 the pair i think.

Thanks Guys...

I was looking at the DD1012's... But my concern is their lower sensitivity 87dB/m.
With a higher sens DVC or 8ohmSVC sub I could run the amp bridged mono and get some damping factor back.

I'll check out the for sale section for those x-maxs :)

Kenwood Exceleron subs?(silver with DB+ on them) If you bargain hard, you may get a pair for $450, I know a place that sells a pair for $500 in SA, pitty your in QLD.

JL audio W0 maybe, again have to bargain a little, but it wouldn't be too ahrd to get them for $450 (rrp$250 (might onyl be 200 now))

Sensitivity is a bad way to evaluate woofers' outputs.

How was the woofer measured?

What enclosure?

What environment?

Measuring a woofer's response with 1watt of power on an infinite baffle in an anechoic chamber is helpful for obtaining data to be used for modeling a subwoofer enclosure design.

However, it gives little scope as to it's real-world, incar output potential.

Cheers joey.. but they are a fraction out of my price range...

Are there any shops around that will let you try subs in your own box, and offer you a different model/type of sub if you are unhappy with the ones you first try??? With obviously maknig up any price differences etc... I know it's a bit optimistic of me, but I can't justify spending that kinda of money, for gains I mightent even receive...
