even just start with the splits and add the amp later. i think the pointy end of 'top quality' splits starts at ~$600. then have them installed well, with the basic pods and sound deadener. splits like the diamond audio M6 series, alpine SPX-177R, etc, are excellent and take about double that cost to get a significant improvement.

for an amp, i would spend a minimum of $300-ish, say an SRx2, for SQ purposes.

I think your better off forgeting budgets and finding out what you like...once you know, work out how your going to pay for it. You may find you spend less as a $500 set may be what you like. Dont put the horse before the cart type deal. Listen listen and then listen some more. Once you know what you need you will work out how to get it

Funnily enough, in a recent issue of ASM both Mr-Bob and myself compared the relative SQ of affordbable amps and splits (subs and CD tuners too!) to see where it is best to spend your money to achieve good SQ. This story used Focal splits (access versus Utopia) and Audison amps (SRx versus VRx).

While you can buy the actual issue to read the full results (back issues dept.) I concluded that there was way more benefit to spending money on splits as there was on amps, and when judged under CAASQ this was also quite evident.

Very interesting. I wouldn't mind a copy of that ASM...but what is it? If anyone feels like scanning that article for me and sending to exc450@gmail.com I'd be cheering :)

Interesting. I was under the impression Audison was "the goods".

I am dealing with a sponsor on this site, and they seem to be very pro- $500ish speakers $500ish SRx over the $800ish speakers, $200ish Jaycar. I really don't know what to do!

visit the store - or ANY store - and do your own comparisons on any demo board they have. compare $500 splits vs $800 splits running off the same amp. can you hear the difference? then compare the same splits working from 2 different amps. the splits in all situations MUST be running at the SAME volume/with the same power to make any valid conclusiongs. note that people often perceive 'louder' as 'better' when it's not the case; only louder!

Shiny - Yeah, I probably can listen to cheap vs expensive speakers. However I doubt the shops will have the amps setup in the same fashion? If you know of a store in Sydney area then I will check them out.

I come from Newcastle.
