You've seen/heard my Pioneer AVH-P7650DVD setup yeah?
The screen also blocks my A/C and some other controls (locks/internal light/trip computer/traction control), but I don't have the screen deployed while driving, so it isn't an issue (plus I have the option of running the video to the factory screen).

I'm actually looking to get a DVA-9861 and use an external/separate screen. I want Alpine to make a new 'no amp' DVD head unit, that would be nice..

Well, the 9861 does have a menu option to shut down the internal distortion unit. Isn't that the next best thing to having no power IC at all?

next best thing, except does the fan run with the power IC turned off? No one seems to be able to tell me yet..
also, with space at a premium I'd rather have a more solid mechanism than 'non-functioning' innards. With the PXA (which is apparently discontinued), only the AiNet and optical outputs are used - all those RCA's are wasted.
I guess you use what suits you best.

It's all about marketing Pulse. The alpy 9861 is aimed at post processing dolby 5.1, PXA connection watching dvd movies with a truck load of bling. SQ wise all it has going for it is the 24 bit DA and the fact that it is DvD, for what good that is. I originally bought mine with the intend of burning 8 or so full cd's onto one DvD only to find that it doesn't support it, only 1,000+ 320 kbps mp3's which is a bit useless imho when the unit supports full speed ipod connectivity.
In some ways I wish I bought the R2-D2, but the price I got the 9861 did make it a good buy and it does sound better than my old unit. Still, I could e-bay it and still get the clarion one day in the future.
If alpine upgrade the 9861, all they are going to do is give it s-video out, some more useless menu options, a prettier face and drop the RRP by a couple a hundred.
If anything, Clarion could upgrade the R2-D2 to DvD transport. That would be more likely than alpine improving the 9861
