Much of a muchness I would think. It will really come down to being able to find a second one down the track to match it with the one you end up getting, as it might be a bit difficult to find another one second hand. Then again it might be simple to find.

For ~$500, second hand is probably the best option if you're after a lot of power, though you may not find too much. The 1001/5 should be a pretty good buy

as above, i'm not aware of any significant performance difference. mostly different 'packaging' (look). i suppose an advantage of the M1005 is that you're more likely to find one 'sooner' in the future come time to buy the second one (cos it's newer).

for >$500, yes, there's plenty of other options. some include:

*alpine PDX-1.600 RRP$699 600WRMS @ 2ohm
*digital designs M1a RRP$779 approx 900WRMS @ 2ohm
*audison SRx1D RRP$728 850WRMS @ 2ohm or LRx1.1k RRP$970 800WRMS @ 2ohm
*boston acoustics GT22 (2ohm bridged mono) RRP$599 500WRMS @ 2ohm or GT24 (2ohm bridged mono) RRP$899 900WRMS @ 2ohm
*eclipse XA1000, rockford fosgate T500-1bd, soundstream PCA1000D

plenty of good options here.

:)

Much of a muchness, as mentioned. Same/similar specs and power output, except the 1005 is heaps smaller. :)

Wait, what?!? Sorry but that last doesn't really read too well.

The AS amps are said to be pretty solid performers, there's a large number of people on here using them with good results in the comps, and also to those who have a listen as well. I'd say that the poor sound you are hearing wouldn't be from the amp (unless it's faulty, but more a poor installation

I'd choose the 1001 for the better damping factor, may have tighter bass... all else equal.

JL Audio 1000/1 is a good performer too, with 1000W RMS @ 12V 2 or 4ohm, but a bit bigger than the alpine amps.
