I'm only including 4 options as I've narrowed my amp and sub choices down to 2 possible subs, and 2 possible amps. I've added the option to vote for more than one setup since, as some people tell me, these would all sound fairly similar and produce similar sq. However, if you've heard all of the gear at any point in time (no matter what it was hooked up to), and you have a favorite, by all means vote for which you think would sound the best

pick what you like, not what someone else likes. your the one who will be listening to the system not someone else on the net.

any of those options will be fine, provided they are in correct enclosures and setup right.

Well I can't demo either of those subs so it's going to have to be a blind buy. I was just going to go by read-ups, specs, reviews, advice and budget so my next port of call was to ask people who actually know something about SQ (i.e. the MEA sq forum members) as all of the installers/sales people I've spoken to so far

a. Have no idea what any of the TS parameters are or mean
b. have never heard of dynamat
c. think 12" ported subs have the best sq

NOT a good bunch of people to get advice from. So I made a poll here. Please add anything you think I should know or products within a similar price range that also are top sq systems. I am pretty dead set on 10"s too. Space and the fact I listen to quite a bit of metal (along with other, more "musical" music) and I DON'T listen to any rap or r&b.

I don't think you'd be disappointed with either of those amps really. I'm running a PDX1.1000 and can't fault it. I haven't heard a JL1000/1, but they are apparently very good as well. The only major thing the JL has over the Alpine, is that it can run a wider range of loads at 1krms, 1.5-4ohms I think, whereas the PDX can only do 2 or 4ohms at 1krms. Not really a big deal IMO though, once you get impedance rise I doubt it would make much of a difference anyhow.

As for the subs, why can't you listen to them? I know the Polk's may be difficult (impossible?) to audition, but surely you could find a JL, or get somewhere like JB to get one in stock (if they'll do this without you having to buy it, I don't know?). Otherwise perhaps head to some specialist stores and have a listen to a few of the 10's they have and purchase one of those. At least that way you know what you are getting, instead of trusting people who may or may not have the same tastes as you. What has made you decide on both of those 2 sets of gear?

jlaudio or anything really over the alpine pdx series, i just dont like the pdx amps at all. Its the amp i will never buy again (4150 not the mono, note that the mono was just as unimpressive on the sound board). There are better and cheaper amps on the market with only slightly bigger footprints.

During my judging days, the cars that I heard with the best SQ bass tended to be 12 inch subs in sealed boxes, singularly or paired. Followed by paired 10 inchers or single 15 inch subs. The best car I ever heard for SQ bass had a single 12 inch sealed sub, which did win first place 15 times in a row and is considered one of the best SQ cars ever created here in perth.

I've heard very few IB's (one of them mine) and no Aperiodic, but given the success that richard clark has had with aperiodic, that should be considered for SQ as well though few people these days would know how to set one up or if the gear is around anymore for them.

A couple of things made me decide on those 2 amps. For the JL, all 3 of my speaker amps are JL (300/4, 2 X 300/2) and I thought the 1000/1 would make a nice aesthetic compliment when I get them installed. But then, all of those amps are HUGE so the PDX was an option in case I need to conserve space (It is a VT wagon, so it's big, but I like to lug my gear around in my car too, got a massive guitar rig).

As for the subs, well I don't know, really. The Polk SR subs have yet to receive a negative review and they would nicely compliment my SR6500's and SR5250's. The JL w6 is well known and highly praised, not to mention easily available. If I could get a decent price on a couple I'd definitely get a couple of morel ultimo 10" should I get enough of a prod or recommendation in that direction.

And yeah, NO IDEA who sells polk in brisbane (particularly bayside/southside area), I know autobarn used to sell it a few years back, but I never saw any of the SR stuff there, it was all DB and a little of the MOMO line.
