I put it down to the fact that cars interiors vary sooo much that they had to give a general position, and the fact that is most likely a french translated document...
I really prefer to trial various positions, including the ones they recommend, and then let my ears (in both seats) be the judge.

i did that with my focal tweeters..

Timmah and i tried a few different locations around the dash area and found in the stock location to work best, and only required the attenuation to be set at -1..
at the moment, my tweeters are still in the flush cups and sorta wedged between the steel structural rail and the trim.. I'm also curious as to how they'll sound on the factory mounts as they are currently firing parallel with the windscreen..

I find my focals a tad bright too - they are installed in my car (suzuki not commodore) about 3/4 of an inch from the windscreen and sound pretty good although I had to do as mentioned above and turn the crossover switch to a lower setting for the tweets...

yeh iv got focal v2s in the front, 6.5inchs in the doors, tweets on the dash firing into the windscreen and yes they come across bright. have taken the edge off the tweets by minusing 3db.
nice set of speakers though, nice and clean and for $450 rrp as well.
