hey guys,

ive been learning a lot from this website and my fiddling with the pulsar and im thinking of puttin a sq system into the hr im in the process of rebuilding into a weekend/show car. I was wondering where to start as the interior is all empty atm and i thought it would be a good time to plan out my system, heres what i have so far:

dynamat all over everything, then put in power, ground, speaker wires and rcas using good quality stuff and probably a higher gauge than i need just to make sure.

im thinking of running a full active 3 way front stage with 8" midbass in doors and mids and tweeters in kick panels all in fg pods, the sub will be in the boot in a ported enclosure (possibly ported through parcel shelf?) an im thinking of a 2 way, probably passive, rear fill, it will all get signals from my laptop with an external sound card with rca outs and maybe 5.1 surround. the laptop will have wireless internet and stuff too and will be powered off the car (the standard power pack has 240vac in and 15vdc out so can i just cut off the output and hardwire it into the car?) i will probably be rewiring the whole car because the nearly half century old wiring probably wont quite cut it anymore and im thinking of using all circut breakers instead of fuses.

what do you think so far, is there anything i missed?
how will the sq of the laptop with a good sound card and cd/dvd drive compare to a good head unit ie hxd2 or similar?
i havnt decided on any brands or anything yet, any suggestions?

I thought this review pretty much gave you a good idea about how to set up a carPC. I'd probably be considering a carPC over a laptop, as you can build it to spec and sort your power issues out with products specifically designed for it. There's no reason why a good quality CD/DVD drive, coupled with a high quality sound card (either external or internal) shouldn't sound as good as something like an HXD2.

Apart from that, it sounds like you've covered most bases. my only thoughts would be that you could consider putting the midbasses somewhere else other than the doors - especially seeing as you're starting frm scratch.

I'm keen to see where this one goes!

thanks for those links, very helpfull. i was thinking of going the laptop route because i already have one and its a bit easyer to do in terms of power supplys etc. but the carpc thing looks very inviting... hmmm, decisions decisions

also where would you suggest i put the midbass drivers?

hmmm...a few options I suppose...

how much steel are you willing to cut?

hows about some fibreglass boxes on the floor under the driver and passenger's legs? they can be quite shallow and extend from under the seat and taper to to near where the pedals are.

you could try and find space in the kicks for your midbass (off axis) and midrange (on axis), possibly even by moving the pedals over a fraction - then tweeters could go elsewhere?

try and explore all your options before sticking your midbass in the doors, unless you're prepared to go to some major extent to modify the interior of the door cavity. As one of our newly self-exiled members pointed out, "condsider dynamat too puny for the task".

The only reason I'm suggesting this is 'cause you've got the car in bits, and you can make a clean start much more easily than someone who doesnt have the seats out, interior trim off, car on blocks etc etc etc. Its a great opportunity to do it right first time.

i dont really want the midbassess under anyones feet just in case... what would i have to do to the doors to make em strong enough for the 8s? or would i be better off putting the midbass in the kicks and the mids in the doors? i havnt got around to measuring the kicks to see if theyll fit but would there be enough volume in there for the midbasses? from memory thers not much room in there...

also ive been looking at DLS gear, how does this compare to other sq brands like morel and stuff in terms of sq vs price?

I have had experience with the SPL Soundstream's before and they were not the greatest for SQ. Something like Focal, Boston, Mb Quart would be more suitable. As for the 6x9 in the rear. Is your car hatch or sedan? In my opinion ditch the rears and run all four channels for your fronts. You wont even notice the loss, I have a VT sedan with rears running off the head unit.They are not even turned on 90% of the time except in comps.

i think youve got your cars confused , the SQ setup will be going into my hr holden, which is a sedan, and will use all new components (not the ones in the pulsar), im yet to decide what brand but im thinking of DLS, has anyone had any experience with this? oppinions?

as for the 6x9s in the pulsar i will be getting rid of them once ive finished the pods in the front and got the splits in properly, at the moment they are running off the head unit as the 4 channel is dedicated to when i get the splits in the front.
