Hi All,

I currenty have a set of Focal 165k2p running off an Eclipse PA4212 (2x125rms) amp. One of my Focals has blown, so I am looking at my options. I figure that its going to cost me about 1k to replace my Focals, so I might as well spend a bit more and upgrade to a set of 3 ways.

I am looking at the Dyn 342's for 1499 plus 350ish for install and more deadening.

I have heard the 2 ways Dyn's in a car almost the same as mine, off a crappier head unit, and a crappier amp, and they sounded pretty awesome.

Who has / has heard the 342's and the k2p's and can comment on the difference between the 2? Obviously a 3 way set is going to sound better, but a thousand dollars better?

I am a little worried about potentially losing kickbass going from Focal to Dyn, and as I really like the sound of the k2p's, will the Dyn's be a little laid back for me? I listen to a lot of house music, rock and jazzy type music. Car is 1999 Subaru Liberty RX

you know focal sell single replacement drivers, if you like them that would be an option rather than changing

The only excuse for passive crossovers is their low cost. Their behavior changes with the signal level dependent dynamics of the drivers. They block the power amplifier from taking maximum control over the voice coil motion. They are a waste of time, if accuracy of reproduction is the goal.

your local focal dealer should be able to get what you need in, are you in sydney? Focal have everything from single drivers to xovers and grills as spare parts. You could pick up the focal 100kp's at the same time and get your 3way happening if you were keen on that still. Run the 4's off the passive you have now with the tweeters and either get the focal 165kbe xover or another amp and run your 6.5 's active etc. Just some ideas for you

Thanks for the replies. If I was to go down the path of a replacement driver, would I need to get 1 or 2? Would a new driver and an old one have a different sound and just not be quite right? Or is that a misconception. I like the idea of customising a nice Focal 3 way setup, but if the Dynaudio will sound better, then I can justify the extra coin. I would love to hear both setups and make up my own mind, unfortunately I am in Brisbane and the best I can find is the 2 way setup of either brand. Northfield Moorooka will be doing the work for me, they do a great job and seem to give excellent advice

I've just had some 3 way Dyns (342) put in recently by NF moorooka but they still need a few more hours of playback before i can get a true idea and yet to get a decent source unit. I thought they had a setup on the board, but can't reacall if it was 3 way. I agree they are more laid back, but pretty nice, and should produce great mids.

mate if you love the focal sound, no point changing unless you've been truly convinced of the benefits.

I'd be looking into the extension kit, or just replacing the current driver, then looking aroud for a few months and seeing what else is out there in your price range..
