Car's are for stereos.

I spent 90% of my time listening in the driveway. Plus, fuel is expensive.

Therefore weight doesnt matter :P

But extra weight increases fuel consumption :D

However, I dont think its practical to put a center channel in the middle of my bonnet, and a left/right channel both around 3-4 foot outside the boundaries of my vehicle. Thus my disagreement. I put the speakers where they should go, and utilise physics with driver/enclosure/environmental interactions to give me what I need.

This is not what I meant Matt.

I think I get what you mean, because you're referring to height yeah? Simply put tweeters up high if you want good soundstage height?

OK on the subbass being non-directional in those terms.

I have my sub crossed over @ 140Hz , it seems ok.

yes, run test tones 15hz and up in 1 db increasements and record on paper and then locate individual rattles and fix. eg~ rattles and hums appear at 68hz but not at 67 or 69hz.

Keep doing it till your car it rattle free. You may have to think up ways to solve your dramas.
Test your woofers seperately and together, so it may take a while to truly do a pro job.

...in all the cars I've built ...

Im sure thats in the thousand's lol
anyway

I have had so many ppl jump in my car, listen and say "I cant believe you get 8s to get that low" etc. I say to them look behind you and they see Im running 12 inch subs as well, yet they hear the bass up front. Go figure. But then I get told by so called experts my stage must be low as my speakers are mounted in kicks.

I have had one industry figure ask me where he can get some of these windscreen speakers lol, but he just listened with his ears.

As stated you cant hear the direction of sub bass period. You can hear resonances and harmonics. I'd suggest you learn your craft then give advice, but thats just me.

I am not a fan of using TA when a decent install works better but TA works (at least from one seat unless you really know what your doing). Im also not a fan of self impossed god syndrome but thats another story lol

hi guys this thread is not only to help me, but im hoping it will become a genuine go to guide for small cheap ways to maximise sq,

im going to run through some small things iv learned or heard of along the way, with hopes that some of the super nerd sq nutts can describe the reasons and effects while adding tips of there own...
....
please feel free to throw in your own, as ill be starting my own install soon, and am looking to maximise a simple stereo for once instead of having a expensive complex stereo running low on efficiency...

thank you
shrek

To add to this insightfull thread. My 2c advice.

- Choose to purchase quality equipment the first time. It is generally a better option to buy a decent single component, than a lot of cheap gear (for the same given price). Quality gear can be built up on later as needs change.

- When mounting drivers, a solid/rigid surface is better than a surface that has give. That is; think about how will the driver (speaker which is shaking forth & back with the music) affect what you are mounting it to? How much will it move with the speaker? Is there a better location for it? Can you stiffen the surface first? Do not confuse this with deadning or noise reduction. Look at it purely from a mechanical point of view.

- Learn your music. Get a referance, a good starting point. Home Hi-Fi's make a great reference to compare your car's system to. Use a quality disc, close you eyes, pay attention and see if you can spot the differences and where one is better (to YOUR EARS) than the other.

- Big Bass is not Sound Quality... if your bass overpowers the rest of your system then it migth "pound bass"; but what about the rest of the music?
