The only excuse for passive crossovers is their low cost. Their behavior changes with the signal level dependent dynamics of the drivers. They block the power amplifier from taking maximum control over the voice coil motion. They are a waste of time, if accuracy of reproduction is the goal.

I know it ain't the sexiest tool around, but if he needs a temporary amp I have a 4x50 Responser and a 4x100 Response (the silver finish ones) sitting around doing nothing - I'd be happy to lend one as a temp replacement. If needed, just let me know.

If only I'd kept that 4ch Brax amp...

There's nothing wrong with those amps.

The Brax would've had better resale I imagine.

Beautiful weather report there - lucky my car has a heater (lack of aircon shouldn't be a problem tomorrow!).

Also lucky MX-5's are one of the more leak-proof soft tops aroud!

While the Jaycar amps don't - from my experience - do anything horribly bad (such as blow up or catch randomly on fire) I definately wouldn't rate them as the best sounding amps around.

I've used them as temporary backup amps a couple of times (hence why they are sitting on the shelf now!) but as soon as I've swapped over to them I've noticed an instant drop in sound quality. Regardless of whether I've used them for sub-bass (sloppy) or mids/highs (electrical noise) I've just never really gotten a good result with them.

Albeit they have proven to be durable little so-and-so's ... that 4x50 has been through a bit in it's reasonbly long life, and it's still works like new. Also they look a thousand times better then any comparably priced mainstream gear (Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, Clarion, etc).

Just about to head off to bed before the drive down, so before doing so just wanted to wish everyone the best of luck for the trip down and also for the competition itself.

This event has been run and won ... tallying is taking place right now, and presentations at 7pm tonight.

I will update with results tonight. Great day all round (despite the weather!).
