noise is noise.

as per the rules for 2009 - Zero Data track is to be used for judging noise.

This is Track 41 on My Disc, or Track 25 on Alpine First Encounter

So i understand it that not everyone is using track 42, why are we?

no need to answer that, i will find the appropriate place to ask this question.

Zero data track is zero data.. Don't see how it matters if it's the F#1 or Track 42 on the other cd.

Track 42 isn't zero bit.......... As said in the first post of the thread. So you aren't comparing apples and apples (Track 42 vs F#1 Track 25). Using track 41 would be however.

Regardless of competition or not, can I clarify one point... your OP seems to be talking about quiescent noise, there are many other types of noise that manifest in the system during playback, but this thread is dealing with quiescent noise only, right?

I saw a few comments about reducing gains to lower noise floor. This is true to a point, until another part of your system has to make excessive noise to generate the signal needed to overcome lower gains. I would think a true SQ system would have this properly balanced from the word go.

Yer - maybe the mods can clean it up a bit?

I was talking about quiescent noise. That feint shhh that you hear when the mute gate is open, and the volume's anything above 10/35.
Turn the volume down or pause the disc and it's gone.
