I listen to a fair amount of folk too, and found the bass from ported is nice, tight bass.

The only time I could really recommend a ported box in a car is if it's for a very small driver (5", 6.5", etc) that you want some more bottom end out of, and even then I'd just suggest a bigger speaker.
Ported boxes IMO don't really work all that well inside cars in SQ applications. The gain low frequency boost from the port tends to combine with the low frequency boost from the cabin gain, and the result is typically a boomy (or sloppy in Cuberpunky's words
Even sealed box subs can be a tad boomy if the box is a little too big, and porting just further emphasises this.
If it's an SPL application, then completely different story - in this case you WANT a big peak so +4dB or +6dB at a set frequency is a benefit, rather then a hinderance.

The steeper roll off of a well designed ported box can help counter the transfer function.
Small sealed boxes are "boomier" than a well designed ported box.
