High end home audio doesn't impress me all that much to be honest. As far as value for money goes, I think it's horrific - no bookshelf I've heard under $1000 has really, legitimately impressed me. The ones that are considered by hi-fi critics to be outstanding are to me, merely 'listenable'.

I've seen some tests comparing some DIY subwoofer drivers in cutom build enclosures, to some relatively high end hi-fi subwoofers (Velodyne, REL, Monitor Audio) and I was very surprised at how mediocre the high price (mostly around US$3,000) hi-fi products performed.

Then again, I'm going off topic, and that's an issue for another day!

I'm going to stick to my custom Seas/Peerless bookshelf speakers until I have the time and money to attack my next project.

:)

To be blatantly honest, I think enough info has been presented here on both sides of the fence to allow the creator of the thread to make an educated decision on which way to go (if that's even an issue anymore??).

Sooooo, I'm going to let the thread get some rest now as it's starting to feel a little repetitive and long in the tooth! Seems that (as always with these threads) we shall all need to agree to disagree, settle on the fact that both options have their pros and cons, and get back to enjoying our music! :D

lol book shelfs??? I agree but I wasn't talking a budget 2.1 system(under$3000) I was referring more to what I used to train some of the vic judges with. A pair of sonus fabre Grand Armatis($50,000), driven off a nice little ($10000ish) set up. Now that sounded OK lol. No subs needed

BTW my home system is bookshelfs and a sub ;)

It really is more simple than your regurgitation is making it to be.

Tune low, build big and the 'response' of a ported can look very similar to a sealed. Except for two things.

One, efficiency. And if you say again that efficiency can be accounted for by more power, then you're the biggest dick I've ever seen. Go listen to some real speakers.

The other is distortion. This is due to the less extension being required from the motor. As you drop lower, a sealed sub starts to move a lot more. This naturally equates to much more distortion. First linear, then non-linear. However, in a ported box, as you drop lower your extension decreases because the port starts acting like a helmholtz resonator. Less extension means less linear distortion. Less distortion means more accurate. Add in the EQ for compensating for Cabin Gain, and you have almost no extension at very low frequencies.

To me personally though, neither of them can compete with IB (or TB). Build IB, and spend the rest of your money on the front end, where it really matters.

Is your post referring to 2 identical boxes modeled using the same sub and box volume?.

Except 1 box is modeled as sealed, and the other is ported and tuned to 1hz?.

(Edited because i cant speak English).

I am interested to know how sealed and ported designs compare to IB, bandpass, and transmission line in terms of response, and response with different cabin gains considered (i.e. compact, 2door ute, regular hatch, sedan, wagon, van). Sealed and ported have been discussed much here, what of our other options? What sort of rolloff can we expect?

IB is king IMO, as they are first order and if done right, tighter than 2 coats of paint. BP are 4th or higher order and so V efficient but are 3 weeks behind music(they suck usually). Transmision line are great but tooooooo f'n big for car audio so not an option IMO
