Hi,

I've just put in a new set of Hybrid Audio mids in my doors, and I have noticed engine noise coming from the right hand mid but nothing coming from the left side. Engine whine increases when I step on the accelerator.

When I had my Focals in (just days before, with no other changes) I did not have any engine noise.

The Focals were connected with spade terminals. The HATs have a connection where u push it in, insert the speaker wire and then it springs back to hold the wire in place. I have made sure that the speaker wire has not gone through to touch the metal basket.

Any suggestions on what to do/look at?

Well it has to be specific to that channel, so I would look at where you have positioned the x-over if has moved even only slightly from where your previous x-over was this could be a likely cause.

Check out where you have run the RCA leads, check the earth sheild on that channel for continuity if it is open circuit you need to replace that RCA.

Check to see if you have moved where your speaker cable has been run, noise can be so bad in VE Commodores that the speaker cables can pick up noise! :s

So check those out and see how you go ;)

engine on....h/u off....no noticeable noise

engine off....h/u on....only a slight whine coming from right side mid

engine on...h/u on....whine is much more noticeable and increases when stepping on the accelerator

I've even held the mid just outside of the mounting hole, so it's not touching ANYTHING....and still get noise...

There are no xovers as I am running fully active through the H701. The RCA leads have not been touched AT ALL.

All I have done is take a speaker out and put another speaker in.

I didn't have noise before.....

*giggles*

ok, composed now.
are you sure no rca's or speaker cables were moved AT ALL?
a while ago i had some alt whine through my speakers, and when i repositioned my amps in the boot, i moved some of the wires around under the back seat. i didnt change where the cables ran through the car, nor did i separate power/signal cables....i just shoved some here and some there to get them to reach the amps in their new positions....and what do u know, the noise disappeared. i wasnt even trying to get rid of the noise.

other than that, i could only suggest checking all connections again to be certain nothing is grounding where it shouldnt

Didn't go anywhere near the h/u (that's in the glovebox)
Didn't go anywhere near the amps (they are in the boot)
Speaker wire was already existing...
All I did was take the door trim off...remove the focal mids...strip the spade terminals off the existing speaker wire....insert the speaker wire into the HAT mids...and screw back in place....

And I'm glad someone is giggling.... :P

I'll have it fixed by Wang....don't u worry buddy! :P

It doesn't mean that your RCA leads aren't the problem... the store where I used to work stopped selling low end RCA leads due to the number of failures (It was a well known brand too) and started using RCA leads worth twice as much and found we had zero RCA problems from then on.

It was just that the cheap RCA leads had poor solder joints in the plugs and these would fail on a regular basis. It would not surprise me in the least if this is the issue that you have and that the sheild wire on that channel has become disconnected.

Check the ground shield for continuity on that channel and see what you find ;)

You have a "slight" whine when engine off? The key is in the ignition position or the accessory position?
If it's in the ignition position, I would suspect that the noise is either being induced into the speaker wire (which may be in a slightly different position inside the door?) or as others have said, an RCA has gone faulty on you.
THe VE is notorious for noise!.. it could even be the voice coil in the door mid that is picking-up the noise from the electrics in the door!

Using Stinger Pro3 RCAs.

Just seems very coincidental that the moment I change speakers (and NOTHING else)....I get engine noise...

Can you change the mids back and see if it's still evident? Might be something to do with the diameter of the VC.

No, I sold the Focals. I do have a set of HAT 3" midranges that I could try...

But when I hold the speaker about 10cm out from the door, to make sure it's not touching any metal...I still get the noise...

Haha...thanks Sean...I appreciate the sentiment.

But unfortunately it doesn't do much for either of our problems :(
