I want to setup an RTA to do some tuning in my car and home.

The only parts I have is a laptop. I'm only really interested in a visual interpretation of the frequency response but I would like a good degree of accuracy.

Would I be better off with a standalone unit? Or would I be better off setting it up with my laptop?

Also, where would I get the appropriate components in Sydney?

Thanks in advanced.

any good music store can sell you the bits you need.

measurement microphone
small mixer or MIC preamp
computer interface - USB or Firewire. make sure it's 24 bit, and at least 48kHz sample rate.

some brands have 'podcast kit' which has all the input stuff, then just the mic you need to add.

Thanks Pulse-R

Any suggestion of a good store to check?

I'll make inquiries from there.

Quick question.

I have no knowledge of the quality of those brands. But anything cheaper would provide poor results? And is true RTA included in your estimate or is the free version usable?
