6x9 versus 8"

Anyhow did some fitting and found that my 8" drivers from my previous car would fit, so I made some new pods etc and fitted them into the 6x9 spot in the front doors, perfect fit.
HOWEVER the bass from the 8's is virtually non-existant compared to the factory 6x9s - they sound barely audible. I checked wiring etc and yep they certainly are moving on the bass hits, just nothing coming through.
I remember in my last setup running off an amp they really thumped - is the fact that I'm just running them off the standard cdplayer the reason for this poor performance? ie they're not an sensitive as the factory speakers?
Also a 6x9 speaker, just going off size along, is roughly the same as an 8" right? Ie they'd have close to equal bass potential all other things being equal?
and FINALLY, the standard setup inthe front of the car is 6x9s in the doors, dash mount tweeters. The factory 6x9s are single cone, no midrange etc. So would it be fair to assume that by switching to my 8" drivers eventually, midrange performance would be about the same? I know 8's arent reknowned for playing fairly high and can disappoint in a 2-way setup for midrange performance, but what makes the factory 6x9s any better?

As you stated, you were running them off an amp and the sensitivity of the speakers is the difference. What configuration were you running the 8s in(sub or mid in a 2way/3way setup).Check the freq range of the 8s and that would explain why you're not getting the same response as you were in the previous car.Running off the factory h/unit won't supply the right amount of power the 8s.

Are they in phase? Fade to the front, then shift balance form left to right. If the bass is louder when on one side, then one channel is out of phase.

Factory setup doesn't run any crossover on the mids, just a cap on the tweeter. Looks like I'll just need to wait till I get my amps going.
But Id still like to know why a single cone 6x9 speaker is "supposedly" able to produce midrange better than my 8" does, aren't they essentially the same cone area at the end of the day?

Amp them up and see how it goes. If your in NSW I could go run my MaxxBass103 on it and see how much potential they really have. Never heard one connected to 8" woofers...

Joe - Sorry mate I'm in QLD, I didn't accept you on MSN cause it sorta looks like an advertiser's email, I've had to block a few of those recently.
