your the only one who can decide if its too much.

You want amps that meet or exceed the rms rating of your speakers. more is good but you dont need 3 times as much. If space is tight then you could get 1 4channel amp but better would be a seperate amp for fronts and sub.

Make sure you mount amps high in the car(not under seats) if you do river crossings, as water and amps dont mix.

i put 2 boston spg-555's, 2 cross fire 1000rms mono block amps, a crossfire 4 channel, kicker 8" midbass and a set of kicker splits in an 06 toyota single cab troopie.... that was a bit too much for the cabin space available, your proposed setup sound more than reasonable
team no audio in the car cos im a sh*t bloke

i would look at small amps (in size) like Alpine PDX and Arc Mini so they can be stowed away and dont take up any room
No car, no system, no idea

will say 1x4 channels running the active front stage, 1x2 channels for the rear fill, 1x2 channels amp for the sub. stereo sub sound better.. a good front unit with 3 pre-out running 4 volts rca out. such as alpine 9887, clarions, nakamichi, denon will give your great sound quality..

Want to elaborate further on the stereo sub? Because 1 sub, bridged, would give a summed mono signal right?

The 165VRS and 21V2 combo are a surprisingly good pair up,
especially if you allow a good 20 Litres or more for the 21V2's.

Personally i'd prefer 2 x 21V2 but then thats just me.

as for power,

either you want 100W rms x 2 for the front, or 50x4 in a active arrangement (clean power, quality over qty)

for the sub, i reccomend at least 200W clean power (if not 300-400) per 21V2.

Don't skimp on deadening, off roaders, especially utes often need it more than most.

there is plenty of other speakers too look at out there in those price ranges.
but honestly i don't think you'll go wrong with that setup.

The Alpine Type X Reference at $699 (can be had for $500ish if you shop hard)
are surprisingly good, but in typical Alpine fashion the tweeters are quite loud even on the lowest neg 6 setting, but off axis in this arrangement are generally bearable to totally listenable if you have a little EQ. If you can run active then obviously this isn't a problem. (the Type X Pro at $999 i didn't feel where as good)

Of course there is lots of other brands to consider too.

The only way a stereo subwoofer setup will sound better is if there's two (you didn't use plural) AND if they weren't set up right.

sorry about that was a bit blur when i was typing that... a dual voice coil subwoofer something like the boston g2 dual voice coil will do the job 2x10 will be a bit too much bass in a van type of vehicle, bass will double and might not be as sweet in a sq based setup ... suv and vans will be nicely suited for spl if you want to be loud but that not our interest here.. alpine type-s will be enough for sq you dont need sub with high watt rating.. in one of my vehicle i run a zapco 2 channels amp to power a dual voice coil subwoofer.

xsnoiz you're right a bridge connection will be mono.. you will want that clean bass no the heavy heart pounding bass like spl

well after a long while of thinking (and looking at the available funds I could get away with)
from the wife....
I went with the following
front : Jaycar ribbon 6.5 splits
rear : Jaycar co-ax 6.5
sub : Jaycar 8" Hi-fi Sub
amp : Jaycar 5 Channel 4 * 60W + 1 * 225W
Sub Box : Custom Built 24 Litre ported box...
Pics to come.

Thanks for the advice.

OH and it sounds great (for the price) and way better than the original speakers.
