This is how it will appear before (and after) the mods:

Firmly pull the air vents and surround panel straight off the dash (clips only,) then undo the screws on the climate control and switch panels, above and below the radio, and then remove the radio. You can see the sockets, we are interested in the left connector shown.

This connector already has AUX inputs connected, these are simply routed down to the passenger side panel and are not connected at the other end. We simply cut the wires and connect our AUX lead, socket or device to these wires:
Left (blue,) right (red,) and ground (upper black wire.)
For connecting a phone car kit, you can see the yellow wire I have already inserted in the plug. This is where the mute connects, and is an active-low pin (Ie. The phone mute is active when the pin is 0v or grounded.)

To connect the pin, I modified a large-size SIL connector contact slightly as shown here.

The pin then inserts and removes just as the OEM ones do.
Then simply re-install everything in reverse to disassembly.
Using the AUX input is as simple as hitting the AUX button.

The phone mute works nicely; when activated, the front speakers mute and the rear speakers keep playing at reduced volume. You can adjust this low volume level whilst in a call, and when you hang up the system returns to normal volume.
