Hi all,

Heres my HOW TO on how to make a boot lid liner with a led logo,

1. I made two templates out of cardboard, one of the front of the boot lid and one of the top and then traced it onto 3mm MDF and cut it out (no pics of this)

2. I then drew a line to were i needed the MDF to bend to match the shape of the boot lid and then soaked the MDF in the bath tub for around 6-7 hours
Posted Image

3. After the cut out was soaked i then drilled holes for the xmas tree plugs and bended the MDF slowly until it was the same shape and fitted it to the boot lid with the xmas tree plugs
Posted Image

4. once it was hheld in place i let it dry over night and the next day i quickly went over it with a hair dryer to make sure it was dry
Then i took it off to make sure it held its shape and this was the result

5. I played around with some XR6 logos until i was happy (this was not the one i used but the pic is just to show you
Posted Image

6. I then cut out the logo on the paper and used it as a stencil and traced out the logo with a marker once i was happy that it was dead centre
Posted Image

7. After some fun times with the jigsaw and sandpaper
(i have not finnished with the sanding in this pic) also i still have to cut and sand the circle of the 6 which will be glued onto the perspex to stay in place

8. i then sanded down the edges of the mdf so it sits and blends in with the boot lid better

9. with quick-grip and mdf glue i then glued down the black vynal, i used a hair dryer around the bends because the heat softens the vynal and makes it easyer to go around the edges
Posted Image

10. once the glue was dry i then started on glueing the vynal back around the XR6 logo,
this was not fun at all because of the sharp and tight corners but the hair dryer helped alot

11. i then made a blue led light box for the back of the logo but unfortunatly i didnt take any pics
but i made it by cutting a piece of perspex to fit behind the logo and sprayed it with glass frosting spray paint then glued and wired the leds facing in around the edge of the perspex,
then i cut a 3mm bit of mdf the same size as the perspex and sprayed it white then sprayed it with light reflecting paint and glued that behind the leds and perspex
so its like a sandwich (perspex, leds, white mdf.

And heres the results

a steamer works aswell for curving mdf.. or releif cuts half way thru the board if using a thicker sheet of mdf...

nice work mate.. pity about the light coming out the sides though.. other then that, very neat, tidy and well exicuted diy..

jukebox, i never thought about using a steamer but thats a bloody good idea, its alot better then waiting hours on end for it to soak,
the light doesnt actually shine threw the sides cause the light on the inside is sealed its just the reflection of the logo shining on the sides of the boot lid and my bad camera skills lol

data mine, my old set-up was carpet and when i decided to re-do the boot i wanted to go black leather to be different and to match my leather interior but the leather was too expensive so i went vinyl which im really happy with cause of the price and it matches my interior perfectly

Ive done the boot lid first so thats why the boot is still in carpet in the pics

OH and im sorry for spelling vinyl vynal lol my bad and thanks again guys for the nice words

youd be glad you didnt go with leather anyway mate, cos you wouldnt wrap it around that logo like you have, lol.. nice work there too btw..

cant wait to see what you do with the rest... should look great..

ohh well, only been posting in these forums for 2 weeks and now ive allready got a new mono amp, im rebuilding my sub box and now doing the boot lid like that haha

on a mates car we just litteraly carpeted the bootlid as it was using spray on glue, came up good but this looks awsome

how did you fit the perspex and more wood under the liner doesnt it push against the braces that go past there??

Divy you are a legend. I was actually looking at my boot lid today to see how to cover it. I figured MDF was too hard so I was going to go shopping for fibreglass supplies on Tuesday. Now, I can save myself a heap of trouble.

Thanks for the well written and extremely helpfull thread.

Cheers
