hmmm, so is the whole 3db efficiency boost effective with the drivers i have??? if so, it doesnt really matter if i do use normal amps that are suited to 4 ohm, cos the drivers are more effficeint...

interesting... i think ill go the clarion anyway, i like the look, and four wont be too hard to hide, they are small....

Maybe you've chosen the wrong drivers for your application then?
There are some decent midbass drivers that are 94-5 db efficient, which would give you more output.

Get some pro drivers. The ones im putting in the torana are 96db and are 4 ohm. and they are 10 inch. Dont restrict yourself to car audio drivers.

i got the sls, cos i got them at a great price, there excursion, distortion and look is what im after...

the exclusives are the same, i traded off eficiency for super low distortion and and responce...

bit late now, i probably should have looked in the pro audio stuff, but i dont regret my decision... ill just power em up...

OK, thats fair enough. The sls are great drivers and with that much power even at 8 ohm will be plenty loud.

Sorry to hijack, but I think its slightly relevant, what happens with amps with regulated power supplies? Do they continue to make rated maximum power into 8ohm speakers?

No, the correct definition for a regulated power is the same output power across a large voltage range, and they should double power for every halving in load impedence, so 200w @ 4 ohm from 10.5v to 14.4v for example and 400w @ 2 ohm from 10.5v to 14.4v. The example you have given is something similar to the RIPS system JL uses which just manipulates rail voltage to control output power.

^^^ Yes the JL was what I was thinking of as I have the JL amps and 8 ohm speakers. I am curious as to what would happen in this case?

Would maximum rail voltage occur at 4 ohms, and therefore maximum power into 8 ohms would be exactly half?

The JL HD750/1 are 750RMS at 4 ohm, so about 375RMS at 8 ohm, up to 2kHz or so IIRC
otherwise the HD 600/4 is 2x300RMS at 8 ohm - could be an option there maybe, or a couple of 450/4 - one for left @ 150x1 + 300x1 per amp @ 8 ohms...
and the 300/2 is 300x1 bridged at 8 ohms.

Go to jaycar and buy three 2x150 amps and one 4x100 amp. Thats only $1000 and gives you the power you are after.

Bridge a 2x150 to each 8inch woofer giving 340wrms to each 8inch.
Bridged the 4x100 to each midrange to give 260wrms to each 4inch.
Run a single 2x150 for the tweeters giving 150wrms to each tweeter.

That power is spot on. The tweeters are more sensitive so you dont need as much power.

if your budget is 2500k, then call marty from fhrx. He has a few zapco reference amps still in boxes. They will definately do the job. maybee not 400rms, but they won't let you down.
