ok peeps, well I have decided I am going to redo my boot install probably over the christmas break, in doing so I would like to update my sub

What I would like to achieve is increased output for when I want to have some fun outside of comps and I would prefer something that can go a bit lower

As some of you know I am currently running a Peerless XXLS 12" off an eaudio 1000D at 4 ohms. My front stage is Rainbow Vanadium phase plug running active.
I had considered getting a 2nd Peerless sub, but am looking into what my other options are
One sub I am considering is a Boston G5

I have thought about going for a 15", again for something different and also to try and hit those low notes a bit better, something I feel my Peerless doesnt do very well. My concern with a 15 would be blending with my 6.5" mids up front.

I am not really interested in an IDMAX, dont know why, it just doesnt tickle my fancy.

I have also been looking at the Exodus subs, in particular the Tempest X2, seems like a nice sub especially for the money. Tempest X2

As far as budget I dont really want to go any more than around $500 as even this will take me some time to save

so........ opinions?

James

G5, unless second-hand, will be over your budget (but well worth it imo)
i had a g5, went to the same peerless as you (and came to the same conclusions about lack of output and low-end extension) and then bought a vibe space12 - very happy with the vibe. it's very similar to the g5 in terms of a good crossover between sq and sql (will handle a BUCKETload of power) and goes pretty low. cheaper than the G5 too.
the tempest x12 also does look very good. some others worth a look are the mach5 ixl12, fi q12 and jbl w12gti. i think there's also still an eclipse 9122 in the for sale forums worth a look too.

according to the latest boston pricelist on FHRX (November 2009) the G5 is now only $499

as for IB, not really sure about that, I mean it is a lot of work and I dont really want to have to drive around with mys ki port down all the time

I have thought about that Eclipse, though I would imagine postage would be a killer

A JBL W12Gti or W15Gti second hand should do what you want for the money. I believe Jas had some for sale, I'm not sure if he still has them.

starting to lean towards the the Shiva X2 now, looks to be quite a nice sub and the price is very reasonable.
its also a little bit different

I would prefer the Tempest X2 but it needs such a huge box and I am not willing to lose that amount of boot space.

now trying to model the sub in bassbox pro, it seems to suggest a selaed box around 26 litres. does this sound right to people? this is the first time i have tried using any box modelling software

i'd go closer to 34L...softer roll-off with slightly extended range. shifts the group delay back to 30Hz @ 6ms too.

actually while your at it, would you mind modelling the Tempest X2?

Resonant frequency Fs 19.5 Hz
Half space sensitivity (1W@1m) SPL 87.9 dB SPL
Mechanical quality factor Qms 3.82
Electrical quality factor Qes 0.47
Total quality factor Qts 0.42
Equivalent Cas air load Vas 255 liters
Effective piston area Sd 807 cm2
DC Resistance (series) Re 3.8 W
Voice-coil inductance (series) Le 0.98 mH
Rated Impedance (series) Z 4 W
Maximum linear excursion Xmax 26 ħmm
Power handling capacity Pmax 1000 W

BassBox is suggesting about 90L, but that just seems massive, especially since the 12 needs a much smaller box

i use winisd - no box modeling program will be perfect, they really only give an indication of what might work well.

that x2 in ur last post does suit a rather large sealed box, i am getting a minimum usable size of ~3.0 cuft or larger

i guess the 12 would be a heap less work, i just think a 15 would be fun :)

just checked, there is no way I can fit the box for a 15 for the install i want to do, looks like it is the 12 for me
