ive chucked in the ps2 and connected it all into the car.
now the only trouble is the power.
i bought a 150W inverter for the cig lighter when i use that
i have sound but no video.. so i thought not enough power
returned the old inverter and bought a 300w one cig lighter aswell
and the same problem.
so i thought ok ill plug it straight to a power point in the garage and
see if that works.. and well it does ive got video and sound..
anyone know what might be causing this??

I think this may be because a lot of cheap inverters aren't actually proper sine waves and are instead modified sine waves which is basically along the lines of a sawtooth or square wave with steps to approximate a sine wave. This can cause some issues, a friend had a problem where any usb device connected to his laptop wouldn't work when running from an inverter. My guess would be the power supply was just way too 'dirty' and this was causing issues with the data being sent over usb.
If you can try and get your hands on a "pure sine wave" inverter and give that a go, I have a feeling it would work.
You may be right about power too though, check the back of the ps2. It should say it's current draw.

PS2's are only around 50W draw... so nearly any inverter will run a PS2, im betting on the modified sine wave playing havoc with the PS2's electronics. Make sure you ground the body of the inverter to the body of the car, helps sometimes, and there is usually a screw to attach a grounding wire to on the inverter.

if the ps2 is a slim line one they only run off a 8v DC source and u could make a voltage reducer to this or but one and they are available here and there, even ebay i think
