Hey All,

I currently have 2 x jl13w3 and want to upgrade to somthing a little louder and cleaner.
I have been looking at 2 choices which will cost the same. Either two boston g5's or two RE Audio Se's. I have heard both but never in a car. I want it to sound good at comps but go loud when i want it too. Also i think my amps will overpower the bostons as i have two kicker zx 750.1 however i think at 4ohm they will be ok.

Any Advice woulod be much appreciated.

(BTW if i run the bostons they will be in a sealed box built by alberts and if i run the RE's they will be in a ported custom moulded box)

headunit : Alpine 9887 with ford facia
Front Stage: Focal k2p power 6 inch with tweeters custom mounted
Front amp : Kicker 250.2 ZR (birth sheet says 290rms)
rear Stage : Stock (want to get a set of mb quarts 5x7)
Subs : 2 x jl audio 13.5w3 in seperate ported boxes (boot sound proofed)
Rear Amps : 2 x kicker 750.1 mono blocks (the birth sheets say 940 and 920)

Boston G512 has better efficiency, larger Sd, higher rated power handling
RE SE12 has larger xmax

Theoretically, the RE can move more air, and even though it is a little less sensitive, it should theoretically be a little bit louder.
Of course, numbers dont tell you everything, and if u plan to put the RE in a ported enclosure and the G5 in a sealed enclosure than i would bet that the RE will most likely be louder.

However, i have not heard and RE SE12 sub, but have heard numerous G5s, most being powered by amps rated to put out ~1000wrms. G5s are an exceptional sub in that not only are they fantastic SQ subs (proven with many MEASQ wins), but they also can go very loud - i've known a couple of SQ set-ups where they have metered in the mid-140s. i dont know if they could go louder, but i wouldnt be surprised if a single G5 could get up around 147-152dB

I reckon the Polk SR subs should be worth a look too. They're renowned for playing clean and loud.

i'm not disagreeing with you, but i've never known someone to comment that the Polk SRs went LOUD...good for SQ, yes, but never LOUD - Linear xmax is only 16mm

The only excuse for passive crossovers is their low cost. Their behavior changes with the signal level dependent dynamics of the drivers. They block the power amplifier from taking maximum control over the voice coil motion. They are a waste of time, if accuracy of reproduction is the goal.

I have 2 G5s, each with a Boston GT-28 (1200+WRMS) on each of them....at 2 Ohm....and I have my gains set to ZERO...and I got about 140dB on the Termlab.

They r incredibly clean yet love the power if u have it...

As for RE...I haven't heard them. They do look good...but the G5 subs seem to b pretty well proven in SQ setups...

U will not b disappointed with the G5.

I'd trust those Bostons, the G5s sound great and Boston is well proven around the traps with a very long history of impressive SQ subs.

Never heard of RE except on this site. Where did they come from and why are they so talked about around here? Is it the new MTX/Fusion fad sub that everyone will forget about in 6 months time or are they something special?

No RE's are something special. They have been around for quite a while now, a very proven and capable woofer. I would happily use them anyday.

RE (Resonant Engineering), as mentioned, is quite well known around the traps. they were not available in Oz for a couple of years, but are back now, being distributed alongside US Amps and Zed Audio.

I'd use one, but not before a G5

Thanks guys. Been living in the US and EU for quite a few years and never saw them at any SQ comps or in any stores when doing my shopping over there. Figured it might just be another fad sub that is being marketed in Aus but it sounds like they could be decent. I'll see if I can find some to have a listen.

Cheers and sorry to take the thread off course

I love Boston, I sold it for 12 years in my shop, built many SQ winners with it, I have a lot in my house.

If you like the Boston sound, you'll like RE. In output terms, I'd say the RE SE takes on from where the Boston leaves off.

Then you have the RE SX and XXX models to consider above the SE. :)

How about an IDMAX???

It beats a G5 on paper in every imaginable are - higher sensitivity, bigger cone area, greater Xmax, higher power handling...you name it. If you ask me they are on par with a G5 for sound quality, and they cost similar money.

I prefer the look if the IDMAX as well, personally. To me the G5 looks like all cute and cheerful - looks like it was designed by tonka toys. The IDMAX is looks simple, yet sinister - it may not be the prettiest thing around, but one look at it and you know it means business.

I do love the IDMax range (I have thousands and thousands of dollars of ID gear in one of my cars), but I wouldn't include in the same breath as RE or a G5. They seem to lack that gut wrenching bottom end the BA or RE woofers.

Serious? My honest impression is that the G5's are way overrated. I've never heard one that sounded bad, but then I've never heard one that really sounded great either. Personally, I always felt they sounded a little gutless and vague.

I thought my IDMAX 12 sounded darn impressive back in my first install, even with my pissant midbass drivers and so-so tuning skills at the time. However, I heard an IDMAX 10 in another install at a later time and thought it sounded like a sloppy pig - then again, install variation can make a massive difference too.
