G5 - scary.

I had phatt knock me up a box for my G5 and a 1000watt plate amp.
Well the kill count so far for the G5 is one picture frame, one window, one pissed off neighbour and one crap scared dog.

I like my G5. Admittedly its not in a car, but in my lounge room it sounds mighty fine. One day I might get the balls to turn the gains up a bit...

Do it...u know u want to! Your neighbour can go to hell! ;)

I like both of my G5s...and don't think I'll be getting rid of them for a while...

I get a bit over 140dB in "SQ" mode....my gains on the sub amps r set to a bit less than 1/3...

thread is tl;dr

all i know is that one of our WA members Kirbo has/had two G512's in the boot of his Volvo 850R in a ported spare tyre well box. they sounded great and pulled 145's from memory which is plenty loud by any means for a daily driver.

i don't think they would disappoint you.

G5's are good, same as DD are good.

not the best available, but pleasing when installed in a correctly sized box.

I guess it comes down to what we're looking for:

Low distortion (a given)
Low extension (can it play 20hz well?)
High extension (low inductance)
Dynamic capability (headroom/SPL)

Let's make a list:
Aurasound NS series
Peerless XXLS
Audiopulse LMS ultra
Velodyne
JBL gti

and I'm sure there's many others based on that criteria for "best available".

For in-car, the best I have heard were Focal 33KX, and Morel Ultimo.

The Peerless XXLS is not better than the G5, but will take a lot more punishment.

See where as I was very disappointed with the Focal and the Morel, I found them flat and lifeless - good for strictly SQ.

Not what I would call an SQL woofer.

I've used 2 X Focal 27KK in a mercedes E430 driven by the most powerful MB Quartz amp at the time (can't remember how much power) in a sealed box for each driver and was extremely dissappointed. Don't know if it was an installation problem or a mismatch with the equipment used. But I''m willing to give the Focal Kevlar drivers another go, maybe take your advice and use the 33KK. I'm not after SPL's but purely sound quality (musicality). I'm going to drive with the 2 channel Sounstream Human Reign amp, or do you suggest another amp?

I've designed countless speakers for home audio and to date the best bass drivers I've used were the Focal Kevlar 11" & 13"". Unfortunately these are no longer available for OEM users. The new audiom woofers are not as good in my opinion.

The built quality for Focal drivers is exceptional.

Aris, as far as I am concerned there are far better drivers out there than Focal for car audio.

Focal is not bad, and you are right they are nicely constructed but I feel there are much better products out there.

You sure you didn't accidentally put that the wrong way around??

I would suggest that in terms of pure sound quality (i.e. accuracy), a G5 is not even close to a XXLS. Against other SQL subs like the IDMAX sure, but not against a pure SQ sub like an XXLS or Ultimo. There is a degree of transparency and detail on an Ultimo / XXLS that just isn't present on a G5.

This is in reference to the Hi-fi variants of the XXLS by the way - I can't comment on the car audio ones, as I haven't used them.

Funilly enough, in terms of potential output levels I would have thought it'd be the other way around - I thought a G5 would Kill the Peerless. I know you've done the whole SPL thing with the XXLS subs though, so i'll take your word for it on that one - termlab doesn't lie after all!

What would you recommend for a sealed box, I'm open to suggestions, as I'm willing to try a number of woofers with the Focals until I get the bass I feel is right.
I not interested in a bass driver for the sake of getting down to 2O or 30 HZ. I would be happy to go to 40 HZ as long the bass is tight and musical.
ie 2 X 10" drivers or 2 X 12" drivers.
I was thinking Morel UW1058, SEAS L26ROY, CDT QES-1020, Focal 33KK, 27KK and Peeless 10" XXLS.
I've also used the Peeless XXLS for home audio and they are exceptionally good drivers and I agree with MU-22-YY's views.
To my ears woofers with a smaller linear X MAX like the peerless & focal tend to sound better in the home environment. Don't know how they would go in a car environment.

Can i ask why your looking at two drivers, do you really need that much displacement? You could always look at a Tempest X for the substage, but i think a single 12 should provide you with enough output :)
