Hello all

Noticed over the last few weeks that it appears one of my morel supremeos have been distorting under certain conditions
eg guitar on intro of sweet child of mine by guns and roses

Tonight i had some time to troubleshoot which involved switching channels and running a new speaker line - distortion followed the tweeter :(

anyone got any suggestions to what could have caused it?

Iv been running it with a crossover of 12db @ 2.5khz connected to my DDC4a which is rated at 100w @ 4ohms per channel
gains are about a 1/3rd from bottom and even on the headunit it was running -7 attenuation

Im presuming its dead, whats the chances of finding another single supremo? :(

If iv gotta buy a pair i might look at other tweeters (eg hopefully cheaper and smaller)

thanks
Luke

Possibly crud in, on or around the moving parts of the tweeter. Although your crossover point is also fairly low... but I don't have specific experience with these so couldn't tell you if it's TOO low. :)

Sounds like you over exerted it , maybe it got a full range signal inadvertantly for a couple of seconds, also maybe that crossover with that slope is just to low for continual daily listening.

I'd look into some SB acoustic tweeters. The ones muzzy is raving about. Or maybe some vifa's that can handle the low crossover.

Kinda sounds like junk in the moving parts but no idea how it would get into it or how to clean it - they are pretty well sealed

According to morel they have a power handling of 220wrms with a 2200khz @ 12db crossover or 120wrms @ 6db

They would have never received full range while iv owned them (iv owned them for about 2 years, previously they were shiny car's), they have always been driven by my 9887 which has a minimum crossover of 2khz and 6db slope on high outputs (and defaults to around 4khz @ 18 db)

They would have never received that power and the amp has never been driven to clipping

not sure if this will help ya but i had a set tweets and one was sounding like it had junk in there that was causing mis alignment or something. Anyway the only thing i could think of was to give it a near death experience so maybe whatever was in the tweete would be dislodged .

I decided to flog the other tweeter aswell to keep them uniform as much as possible. Cant remember what i gave but it was lower than 1000hz and i just guessed at the volume as not to cook them but they did recieve a flogging.Although they were only mid spec tweets and not high end supremo

well iv come up with a few options

1) Possible repair? not sure of cost

2) Peerless HDS tweeter, should drop into my pods and are meant to sound as good as morels? $200 used

3) Hybrid audio L1 Pro, need new pods but means i can go smaller, ~$370 used

4) buy another morel, $200 second hand for one on DIYMA

That would be my pick. I've used those tweeters before and they are pure awesome.

a xover frequency of 2.5kHz is not too low. the driver can handle relatively low frequencies fine. Fs is 680Hz, and frequency response is claimed to be 1400Hz.

well iv got with a pair of HDS tweeters for now and ill send my morel off to speaker bits, they seem to think it should only cost around $70 to repair.

Then ill decide which tweeters ill keep using - left overs will either be sold or made into a set of bookshelfs :)
