Hey everyone :)

Well....the majority of us would be pretty familiar with the Alpine F#1 "First Encounter" CD...and it's the reference CD of choice for the MEASQ comps...

However....I am getting a bit sick of it...

What else do you listen to when u r tuning your system?

I also have "Chesky Best 10" as well as a Sheffield Coustic CD (not sure what it is tho...it's a burnt copy)...

Unfortunately...most of my music is on my iPod (eeeeekk!!!!)....But looking to add to my CD collection :)

+1 on Chesky10 & Alpine First Encounter.

Also -
Sheffield Labs - DRIVE
Chesky - Ultimate Demonstration Disc
Stock Fish Records - Closer to the Music Vol1 & 2
BEE - Real Music for Real People (carefull you don't accidentaly buy the SACD only version)
DJ Revolution - The breaks Hi-Fidelity
Musique - Various
IASCA Test Disc (there is several, currently have a good copy of the 2005 disc)

Also Japan has a lot of hi-defintion recording music (of both Japanese & western artists)on CD. Some can be bought on e-bay

***Note, a reference CD also needs a reference playback system, here a pair of headphones (for tonality & definition) and a properly set up hifi (for staging & stereophonics (or panned mono :eyeroll:)) comes in very handy with any of the above.

imo, focal test discs = fail...they sound very compressed an un-natural

i like alot of the stockfish records, but for tuning i just use a collection of track from the various judging cds we've had over the years along with some from the emma and iasca discs

There's another one floating around the traps now that I'm really enjoying.
It's EASCA's 2009 Competition Disc. http://www.hybridaudio.com.au/index.php//R...-Disc/p_31.html

There's no single one disc that does it all though - you need a combination of discs.

hahahahahahaha!

Thats gold Henry! :D :D

On a more serious note, i listen to quite a bit of random stuff from time to time. Some include; Ray Charles (a few different albums), Christina Aguilera, Ultimate Acoustic Songbook, just to name a few. :)

And of course the standard reference discs like, Chesky 10 Best, Chesky UDD, My Disc, etc etc.

Actually the new Metalica CD is pretty much regarded as one the WORST recorded CD's in history, there were several online petitions to have the CD re recorded, the band blaimed everyone else involved in it, and everyone else blaimed everyone else, getting a theme here. Anyway the Guitar Hero version of the Album is actually OKish, they didn't f*** it up so badly.

As for my reference's pretty much anything that is recorded well, infact I tend to shy away from many of the purpose recorded reference CD's, I think alot of them spend so much time making everything technically perfect that the end result is pretty dull to listen too, and I find it very hard to tune if I don't get a sense of the music and soul of the musician.

i havent had a chance to get them onto a CD.. but playing them off my HTPC doesnt sound compressed to me
I can hear the difference with 320 k bit rates but the APE and other full lossless file formats I have.. sound fantastic including the focal test discs 1-6...

I have a few other ones on the PC.. that play through my home system.. but are too big to get on CD, such as the Chesky recording discs? cant remember the exact name.

where do people order these Test Discs from? ebay?
there seems to be no where in NZ that sells them, that I know of?

I have the Sheffield labs? one and the IASCA Test Disc.. but would like more
