I just throw on some Johnny Cash, and when tears start to form in the corner of my eye when I am listenning to "Four Strong Winds" I know I got it sounding pretty sweet.

Also enjoy Jack Johnson, as Tiger mentioned, I find his music both well recorded, and detailed enough to set up the system (and he has alot of nice deep bass :) )

bit of a thread dig here but i'm into the harder styles of dance music and with my system half setup im finding them horrid to listen too. the rock music and pop is sounding good but the 160bpm symbols just roll into eacother and sound like hiss. guess i used to ignore it when stock as the bass distortion was a bigger issue :P. i'll let you know this weekend if it's my speakers (swapping stock for HSK's) or if the music just wasnt recorded/produced well enough for a decent system.

any way anyone know any particuarly well produced dance/tech cd's?
Hey mate I'm into a lot of dance stuff too. I haven't found much well recorded hard style, but the Armada Trance albums always have a great selection of tracks on them that seem to be recorded better than most of the housey albums (Hed Kandi etc), if you can handle some slower trancey stuff. The latest Armada is number 8, there's a track by Lentos on there called "Forget About Us (Barnes & H Mix)" with super duper lows and super tight punch at the same time at about 180bpm in the intro. I lost my breath listening to that yesterday!

My personal reference CD collection - the 5-6 titles I keep close at hand for tuning and evaluating:

Posted Image
AYA's Evaluation CD - This is an organisation similar to MEASQ that had a disc produced by Stockfisch Records. It's quickly become one of my fave's, and I know Spyne speaks highly of it also.

Posted Image
EASCA Evaluation CD - Again, like about, another organisation's disc that is close to hand for me. This has actually become one of our best sellers in only a short time.

Posted Image
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms on XRCD format. Need I say more? It's got Money for Nothing and Brothers in Arms on it. Play it loud!
http://referencedisc...rms-xrcd2-.html

Posted Image
Jennifer Warnes, The Well & The Hunter - My choice for clear female vocals. I love Jennifer Warnes and she's in the collection of many audiophiles worldwide.
http://referencedisc...l-gold-cd-.html
http://referencedisc...r-gold-cd-.html

Chris Jones - Roadhouses & Automobiles. If you want clear, dynamic sounds from acoustic guitars and low male vocals and bass, this is it! One of mine, Mark from FCA's and many other fave's!

I hope that helps for those that are overwhelmed with the choices on offer. I get asked all the time to put a list together with an overview of each which I will do in time. :)

I don't think there are many competitors who DON'T have a copy of Brothers In Arms for testing and tuning :)

My picks (in no order:)

Katie Noonan - Skin
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Terra Firma - Music to Live By
Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine

Changes from time to time. But there you go.

As for trance, I have Trance Nation 3 - a disc I've had for many, many years and I am perhaps more familiar with it, on more systems than any other music I have ever had, apart from perhaps Play by Moby.

Another one I also use is the album Hotel California - The Eagles. I have also just downloaded it in 96kHz 24 bit Flac to see if it gets any better.

One of my favourite CD's also ... brilliant recording and absolutely stunning realism ... especially those japanese drums.

Well I would be one who doesn't. I absolutely hate Dire Straits and also The Eagles too. You will never find their CD's in my collection.

I've recently aquired Audison Muic Expressions Volume 1.

Pay particular attention to track 3: "Sometimes I'm Happy". A very challenging track & exceptional for checking whether the sub and midbass blends seamlessly as one not to mention whether the midrange is at the correct levels. Once you get this correct your front stage will be phenominal with the midbass plowing to low extension levels and the subwoofer just filling in the lower fundamentals as it should.

Among my favourites on this disc is also track 7: "Shine On". Very good for checking width and focus. Ps- the guitar on the far right is actually further from the centre than that harmonica.

Now for my favourite on this disc by far is Track 8: "The Blues Is here to Stay". That electric guitar should not only be dazzling but have balls gentlemen and should stand it's ground, the bass will rock you, not too mention that the cymbals of the drumkit should sound bright. Yes, I said bright, not unpleasant.
"Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember what you have now was once among the things you only hoped for..."
