The Type R vs xxxxx comparo has been done heaps, but not where box size has been a factor in the comparison.

I have limited space and would like to keep weight to a minimum but still want a subwoofer.

so for the price range of the type R ($300-$400) what else is there that would be comparable in a small-ish sealed sub box? I do hear that the Type Rs are in their element in small enclosures.

Peerless subwoofers are fine in small, sealed enclosures. They are also in the same price range. However, I think they are more of an SQ subwoofer than Type R so you might not get the "doof doof" that you're looking for (assuming you are looking for a better all-rounder).

I currently have 2 x IDQ10's in the car in a 30 litre enclosure and the performance is excellent. The 12 is quite comfortable down to the very low 20's and will still go down to 20hz no problem. Don't look as fancy as Type R's though.

30L isnt small, try half that or less and then you are talking small :)

As Steve mentions, the ID's can use a small enclosure, Boston, JL, Focal, Treo and many others can be used in very small enclosures. It just depends on your budget and what type of bass your looking to acheive with that budget.

If it's small (like what you have mentioned) dont expect to get anything that will rock your socks off :)

I just got a new type r 12" and from what info i could find SQ wise they perform better in a bigger box then alpine recommends so i made mine about 38L total, so maybe if your trying for small and SQ, maybe go for something else. Also i found it VERY power hungry its giving my bridged 4 channel thats supplying about 300rms @ 4ohm a hard time it used to run two 10" @ 2ohms's quite easily. so im now shopping for a new amp.

I have been doing some more research and came across the Boston Acoustics G212.

How would this compare to the Type R sub?

I am after a SQ sub as opposed to SPL, afterall I have a 4x130 Jaycar amp and drive a Celica (v.small cabin), if i want SPL just need to close the windows!

I would say the Boston is several steps up from the Type R.

30L is more than 1 cubic foot!

A whole host of subwoofers will work fine in even .8 cubic feet boxes (22L).
