We've often spoken on some threads how their using trickery in recording studios to make a CD seem "loud". We talk about it a fair bit, because as SQ fans, its not something we want. But how can we show that to some one who is used to "loud" music...
Here is a link to a video that does a very good (& somewhat oversimplified) job at trying to explain what happens. Im saying this is 100% accurate or something new, but just hope to shed some light on the subject.

Hope this helps...

old news - compression as a means to achieve a louder sound = SQ MEGA-Fail!!

but, a good vid chris. there's a few others that are also good ('if smells like teen spirit was released today', 'Michael Jackson original thriller 1982 vs. remastered 2008 [quality cd]', etc)

yup, hence it came up again. Compression, gate limiting, overdrive etc... its not news, however that video was to me & since I didn't find it in a search, though id post it. Sometimes visualising things can help comprehension.

another point here, is the compression for iPod, etc.

if you take a song with minimal compression and compress it to 128kbit, it may still sound acceptable.
if you take a song with a load of compression and compress it to 128kbit, it sounds like mush.

so you encode your loud mush song at 320kbit, to keep some semblance of music in there, means you need to buy a bigger capacity ipod to fit all your songs on there.

the media player manufacturers (or marketers) may well be responsible for the loudness war....

The loudness war has been going on since pop in the '80s on cassette... :)

It's true that overcompressed music as MP3 sounds like balls. You're taking limited dynamic range, high in amplitude, and applying an algorithm that chops some of the FR off, reduces the dynamic range, then removes every second bit of detail :) No wonder I'm noticing the already big difference between MP3 and CD even more these days.
