hi all

I am just after some advice, currently i am running my tweeters active in the a-pillar and am currently using TA on them, however it is my understanding that tweeters are more responsive to a change in volume than TA.
I have figured out a way that I can have individual gain control of each tweeter (dont know why i didnt think of it earlier), however i was unsure if i should be using TA as well as the gains, or am I better off just turning the TA off altogether on the tweeters.
I know trial and error is usually the best but I am an impatient fellow :P

cheers

First questions 2 way or 3 way and what is your xover point?

If it's 2 way you will most likely find TA will be of some benefit combined with independent volume, as in a 2 way you will most likey be down in that range where TA will still steer the sound. Once you get into 3way territory 4k+ xover point, then the TA will start to lose affect, but it won't hurt to apply a bit aswell if you feel it acheives a better end result.

As you said you won't know till you try.

my car - T/A between tweeters within 0.05ms of each other, gains same same.

the gain does change the centre image a bit, but T/A has much much much more effect on depth and centre image.

T/A compared to mids/midbass... equivalent to the distance.

all about install and firing angle.

with all speakers playing, adjusting T/A on my tweeters has no audible effect. However, when sydmonster and I were playing with tweeter angles and gain before the ACT final last year, we also turned the T/A back to zero. As I hit the buttons and the t/a went from 130cms to 0cms, the image shot across the dash. This was with just the tweeters playing. So yes, I think it does have an effect thats worth thinking about and tuning for.

as simon says though (:D) it helps having someone else in the car listening as you tune

The only excuse for passive crossovers is their low cost. Their behavior changes with the signal level dependent dynamics of the drivers. They block the power amplifier from taking maximum control over the voice coil motion. They are a waste of time, if accuracy of reproduction is the goal.

I use T/A and level matching...

I tune for a single seat however.

In Delta alignment, TA will impact harmonics, if you're running 3 way, so you'll notice it slightly. Gain has a HUGE impact on both location, depth and height (obviously height because the higher frequencies are your height perceptors).

In parallel alignment, TA is critical to ensure the crossover frequencies from both mid and tweeter drivers are firing such that they arrive at your ears at the same time. If you dont nail this, you'll be chasing your tail forever.
