Well, I am not completely happy with my some-what lack of midrange, and after hearing a few systems with a dedicated midrange, I am now hooked. This will mean having to buy new amps... yet again

So what would people recommend for a dedicated mid. My requirements are, nothing that will require me cutting metal for airspace, I am completely unwilling to hack my car. So, I am guessing I need a seal dome mid?

I have looked at either offerings from Morel or Dynaudio. I like the Morels for sizing and also 4ohm!! The Dyns are a great option, but again 8ohm which could prove an issue.

What would people be suggesting??

Hey Clint,

before you spend a bit of dosh on those other 2 mentioned, why not try a Dayton RS52 2inch dome. by all accounts a very capable driver and very cheap. Also not to big so less cutting more mounting options.

Morel CDM54/88 are very small and easy to mount.
While not sealed (the CDM54 atleast), it does not need an enclosure.
Smaller faceplate then the Dyn, and 4ohm too iirc.

typically, a 'cone' driver can play lower than a 'dome' driver. you may or may not be fussed about how low you can set the HP filter; cos ideally, the midrange will play all the vocals, right down to say 300Hz (sometimes lower, but ok to have your midwoofer play this low). some dome mids need to be HP'd at around 600~800Hz.

some domes are sealed, so they don't require a dedicated enclosure. cone drivers will require a sealed enclosure, so more of a hassle to install.

are you a fanboy of brandnames, or happy with raw drivers.
*brands: audison Thesis, dynaudio esotect/esotar, morel CDM, focal, HAT, etc
*raw: vifa, peerless, scanspeak, etc

I'll be the first one to recommend the biggest midrange you can fit!!
5" mids in the kicks, FTW!

But in your car sadly a cone isn't feasible, without cutting

I'm pretty happy with my aura whispers on the dash, but unless you have at least 2 per side, they aren't super dynamic with a lower crossover. I've got 3 per side in my car and without a tweeter they require HEAPS of tuning to get sounding good. It's the ability to fit them ANYWHERE that make these things good. On axis with no obstructions is totally different from what you normally get in a car. Highly recommend.

If I had my time again I'd use 4-6 per side and cross them over at 315-400 12db-24db slope

dayton has a bit wider usable band, tangband has slightly better distortion and csd performance

The Focal BE 3W2 is nice and shallow making it relatively easy to mount in the A pillars.


Anything bigger than 3" tends to get hard for A pillar mounting IMO, especially if you don't want to start cutting things.

I agree with Fury Clint, bigger for midrange is better. Find the biggest midrange you can fit and don't be scared to modify or hack your car up...

bigger allows the driver to play lower, but it can make the higher midrange worse. 3~4" is about the right compromise.

I agree with Rich, 3~4" in ideal, anymore is overkill... oh sorry we are talking speakers

The Morels are looking a very good option, I do like the Dyn mid however, just wish it was available in 4ohm.
