They do have their benefits!

Wind down the windows, take down the roof, and you have essentially elimnated about 3/4 of your reflection problems. Even just from unzipping the rear window, I can hear an improvement in sound stability.

Problem is, this only works when your stationary - start actully [i]driving[i] with the roof down, and the massively increased noise floor essentially makes youre gut wrenching system sound like a mobile phone speaker lol

I'm curious about this myself - I've heard from a few soruces that the HX-D2 is better sounding unit then the P90 combo (in terms of pure SQ) - that's been one of the biggest factors (along with price and EQ) holding me back from buying a P90 in the past.

Love the idea of a 'single unit' P90, but biggest thing turning me off this P99R right now is the looks...it looks absolutely gorgeous in the official Pioneer photos, but in every photo i've seen of them actually in cars they look WAY too shiny/reflective to the point where it looks like it migth impact on usability in direct sunlight. Could be an issue for me moreso then others with my car being a convertible. Also felt the uber-glossiness made the unit look a little cheap/tacky as well.

I'll save my final judgement until I actually see on in the flesh though, as my HX-D2 is starting to show it's age (one tweeter RCA not working, buttons starting to get clunky) so I'm keeping my mind very much open for potential replacements.

I'm not so sure about a HX-D2 sounding better than a P9/P90... I have had a P9, spend time listening to the P90 and have friends and customers with the HX-D2 and I feel the Pioneer units are a better product hands down in terms of audio performance.

As for the cosmetics of the P99, I can only comment from seeing a P99 in a display board and it follows the glossy theme of the 2010 Pioneer range... I prefer a matte finish myself however even with a display that is hard to read all I need to do when I can't read it in the sun is adjust the volume and that I can do without looking at the unit so not a big issue as far as I am concerned.

PS- Expected RRP is $2199 :)

The only excuse for passive crossovers is their low cost. Their behavior changes with the signal level dependent dynamics of the drivers. They block the power amplifier from taking maximum control over the voice coil motion. They are a waste of time, if accuracy of reproduction is the goal.

Love the P99. Raw SQ wise, D2 is better head unit. Functionality wise P99 is the winner.
Finally raw SQ isn't any good if you haven't got enough tuning tools to deal with acoustical problem of your car.
