Hi Guys. I'm after some advice on what sought of front splits to change my alpine type r's for. I was looking at going to a 3 way split but having most people point you towards the $1600 focals was wondering if anyone might know of a good 3 way at a decent price. I'm fairly new to the car stereo world so I figure asking a wide range of people is the best idea. Shops only want to tell you about what they sell, not whats good for the price. I look forward to hearing all your suggestions and thank you in advance for your help.

My Suggestion is, unless you want the hassles of 3-way, then 2-way is much easier to install, and will also sound great.

If you really want to go 3-way, and don't want to build custom passive crossovers, then $1600 would be a minimum for good sound.

there are cheaper 3-ways available, but a similar priced 2-way will most likely sound better for the $$

Yeah there is a fair bit involved with 3 ways. So what would you suggest as a good 2 way? The type r's arent bad but they wont be winning me an sq comp anytime soon I wouldn't think.

good 2-way systems include;
focal krx2 (a much improved tweeter makes these quite a nice set to listen to)
crescendo opus 8.6 (MANY proven results in SQ comps)
morel elate6
dynaudio 242 (also a very proven performer)
boston acoustics pro60
hybrid audio technology (HAT) L6 component set (comes with fantastic crossovers)

there's a few to get you started. best advice is to go out and listen to a few sets in/around your budget and see what YOU like the sound of best

It looks like you are active competitor(sig).
I cant really name any products, but with most 2 way fronts , running the speakers active will give you better stage for comp results.
Running active also lends itself to using different drivers combination(brand names) tweeter bandx - midbass brand V.

Shaun my advice is perhaps at the next ACT comp try and have a listen to as many cars as you can. It is by far the best way to hear a wide range of speakers.
I would certainly stick with 2 way also. Though probably the best start is to decide what your budget is and then work from there.
