Have been intrigued by high effiency drivers and directivity control for a while now...
So thought it was time to get my hands dirty and get a little hands on experience.

Originally my design was to build a 2-way pair of monitors... In this design, I was happy to sacrifice directivity control for low end extension, hence why I went with 12" woofers.
If I did not already have these drivers I would be looking at using a higher efficiency 8" midrange, which would better maintain directivity control.

The drivers in use:
Highs: BMS 4550 1" exit compression driver in QSC 10" round waveguide
Mids: JBL 2206H 12" midrange/midbass
Lows: JBL W15GTI

Top cab is approx ~1cu.ft, while the bass cab is approx 3cu.ft.

Crossover/EQ/TA will be handled via a Behringer DCX2496.
Amplification as follows:
Highs: Marantz MA6100 monoblock
Mids: Marantz MA6100 monoblock
Lows: Cambridge Audio 840W

Nice design Fury. I like where this is going. Nice choice of drivers too. I would like to see the W15 in IB though, maybe a few of them in the roof? Are you modifying the round wave guide at all, to make it more directional. I know the geddes style waveguide is not a smooth outward curve, will you modify yours to something similar or are trying for an even bigger sweet spot to listen in?Keep the updates coming.Ant

2 x W15GTI's won't have a chance to keep up with the compression driver or midrange/midbass in IB config... Sadly buying 2+ more of these is a tad on the expensive side (and proving difficult to even find 2 more) so that's not really an option. If I ever build, there will be a wall of IB subs :)

I will leave the profile of the waveguide as is for the mean time, and listen/measure first.

The goal is to create a "large" sweet spot if possible, but also to try and remove the room from the equation as much as possible (dipole would definately be an option here).

Those have been completed for over a year now, infact probably close to 2... Don't you keep up with the times? :P
I've completed them and moved on... new design ideals, which hopefully mean better sound :)
The Mordyns do have a very sweet top end though.

Should be more than enough cone area for some indoor fun...

IMO the crossover may let down those fantastic amps a little though.

Fair enough on the IB, you would need about 4, maybe even 8 to keep up with the horns. Will you be doing any room treatments? carpet, rugs? ceiling hangings, curtains etc? Maybe even some wall panels?Ant

Definately!
Won't be until after these are completed/measured in room... And then i'll decide what's necessary.
And when I get a bigger room to put them in :) (Currently the Mordyns are in my bedroom - these will hardly fit).

Yeah, I think a bigger room is necessary, they will take your head off in a bedroom. I had a set of three way floor standers in my lounge room, only 4m x 3.5m, and they were too much so I built some small 5.25 mini monitors for next to the T.V on the fireplace and they are bloody loud too.I hope you've got a nice size lounge room for these.Ant
