I am doing some preliminary research into my new system in my ute. I have a pair of CSS SDX7's that I was using as midbass woofers in my old system. In order to minimise the enclosure sizes and utilise the drivers I have, I can install these in 15L ported enclosures in the areas at the base of the seats. When modelled a pair of these will match single Focal 27V2 for SPL, and go lower, in a 20L enclosure. So, I put this out there, will a pair of 7" XBL2 drivers be able to go toe to toe with a 27V2 in a ute? Installation wise its a winner as I can downfire the drivers and create the longest pathlength I can in a ute cabin and the model well. Any ideas/criticisms welcome.

Focal 27V2 (25L Sealed) = Yellow
2 x CSS SDX7 (26L Ported 38Hz) = Grey

I see no reason why it will not work, in fact i think its a great idea and i really hope you give it a go then report back on how it worked, if your have the drivers then MDF is cheap right, based on the Winisd model you stand to gain output/headroom.

What does group delay look like though? And another question is how does port length look in such a small enclosure?

I would say you would get the freq. response, but they would not get as loud as the focal. The response also drops off alot quicker than the focals, 50hz is not THAT low for a sub, but with cabin gain, it may sound pretty good.

Interesting project though, could be worth a shot I guess, although i would go for the Focal myself :)

I thought the same shizzle, but that's the SPL graph with 500wrms (JL Slash 500/1) feeding into both setups. The CSS system model's louder, it seems to good to be true? There is some concerns with over excursion below 28Hz on the CSS drivers in a ported configuration but I have subsonic filters for that.

Sam, the enclosures will have to be made out of fibreglass so its quite a lengthy project, hence the thread. I 'may' build an enclosure out of mdf first to test. Gotta get cracking!

A 68mm port will be 220mm in that enclosure, not undoable? I'm not that experienced with ported enclosures (I like sealed and IB) but the graphs definitely favour it.

Heres the group delay of the CSS (Grey) and Focal 27V2 (Yellow)

I don't think you'll be able to get the same impact from two 6.5" drivers, even if it does look good on paper.

It's by no means a reason to can the idea, but I have found first hand that cone area reigns supreme.
